All I know is college football was infinitely better in 1993. It used to be way more likable.

And yet, when the final Bowl Coalition rankings were released in 1993, this is how everything shook out:

1. Florida State (11-1)
2. Nebraska (11-0)
3. West Virginia (11-0)
4. Notre Dame (10-1)
Actually Nebraska was 1 and FSU was 2, and the rankings were determined by total points in the two major polls. It isn’t like someone or a small group of people assigned those specific rankings.

Florida State was 3rd in the coaches poll and first in the AP, Nebraska was 1 and 2, West Virginia was 2 and 3. So you have the AP poll to thank for FSU getting in that year.

You want to know how I know that you don't know how the BCS teams were selected?

None of this happened. As an LSU fan, I have been assured on many occasions that cfb did not exist during the 90’s.

Your entire argument falls apart right here. The Bowl Coalition was extremely flawed, and that’s the reason that it was replaced by the Bowl Alliance and then finally the
BCS once they got everyone on board, and finally the college football playoff.

FWIW, the stated purpose of the Bowl Coalition was to match the teams ranked #1 and #2 in the polls in a Bowl Game. It did so using a predetermined formula. This was not a case of a “committee” making a decision. They literally took the AP and Coaches poll and essentially averaged them.

Now, keeping in mind that everyone agreed
the Bowl Coalition was a flawed system and what happened in 1993 was bad, they eventually created the CFP to fix things.

quote:

So not only was West Virginia, a major conference program, robbed of a national championship berth by a 1-loss Florida State team, they also stole a national championship from Notre Dame - a team that had beaten them head-to-head and finished second in both major polls with the same amount of losses as Florida State.

Again, you’re talking about 1993 - there were seven “major conferences”
- SEC, Big 8, SWC, ACC, Big East along with the PAC 10 and the Big 10 who were not part of the Bowl Coalition.
There is a major difference between 2
spots for 7 conferences and 4 spots for 5.

Now, are you saying that because Kannell wears a national championship ring from 1993 that he won in part due to a “flawed
system” it makes him a hypocrite today ? That’s certainly ripe for an Alabama fan that claims 735 national championships because they beat Mesopotamia Tech back in the day.

But no, pointing to a flawed result from a flawed system 30 years ago doesn’t justify a flawed result from a corrupt decision makers today.

Many teams have been screwed over the years by not having a proper playoff system in place.

Was Auburn on probation that year? Wasn't the Big East really weak that year outside of Miami?

Alabama can frick off with the history lessons about benefitting from the polls.

Alabama “won” a national championship in 1973 after losing their bowl game because it was the last season the coaches awarded it before the bowls.

Alabama’s next national championship in 1978 was won because Alabama won their bowl game and national championships were now awarded after the bowls.

DK also laughed off WVU by pointing out the bowl result against Florida. I don't think he's going to accept the same argument if Florida State gets trashed by UGA.

I was at WVU at the time. It didn't help our QB "Whiskey" Jake Kelchner, transfer from Notre Dame, was boozing it up on Bournon Street the week of the Sugar Bowl. Plus he got knocked out of the game and our backup got a concussion during the game. Backup got knocked silly on one play and lined up under the guard on the next play
