Two things I don’t frick around with are gun safety and lifelines while climbing a tree. I have not found out.

Either you were wearing a youth vest or the warden is a dumbass, the later being more likely.
This game warden is a dumbarse and a hardarse. He busted up in the hunting club last year and questioned everyone because he heard a shot in the area 40 minutes after sunset.

Not a big game hunter but I know as an upland hunter hunter orange is crucial in locating other hunters in the field so safe shots can be taken. Always good to communicate as well but hunter orange is the first line of defense
Amen. When birds flush they go everywhere and even when hunters have hunted a long time together swinging toward one another happens. It shouldn't but it does. Having on something that gets the attention is imperative.

I still had on my orange and camo vest. There was a game warden there who said he could write me a ticket if thats all I was wearing if he had caught me in the woods. The vest meets the rules in Louisiana but not in Mississippi because the camo interrupts the solidness of the orange per this game warden. I hunt on private land and also wear an beanie or hat, but that encounter just really chapped my arse. Your vest was orange camo? And you were hunting in Mississippi where you can’t wear orange camo? If so, it sounds like you were in violation if you have to wear unbroken orange. Am I missing something? Maybe he was looking out for your safety?
Yeah. The orange hat on my dashboard that I was also wearing while hunting. He was being a dick. He is the epitome of “dickhead game warden.” Anybody who hunts north of Jackson Ms or has ever been on a boat on the reservoir probably knows who I am talking about.

“During the 1972-73 season, 80 Mississippi hunters were shot and 34 of them died. Read that again — 80 shot, 34 deaths, all the result of deer hunting accidents. On one day at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, three hunters arrived at the emergency room with gunshot wounds; one of them survived.
Shortly after the bloodiest of all deer seasons ended, the 1973 Mississippi Legislature passed a bill requiring deer hunters wear a minimum of an orange hat, which, unfortunately, people didn’t want to do. The last thing they wanted was to be more visible, and being told that deer didn’t see orange as humans do didn’t matter.
The 1973-74 season still saw 75 hunters shot and 15 killed.”
In 1974 I was 9 years old and belonged to the Cub Scouts. One of our fellow scouts and his older brother were deer hunting on public land and the older brother, carrying their rifle, tripped and blew his brothers head nearly off. The family asked that the Cub Scouts serve as pall bearers at the funeral. We were all 8-10 years old. They had an open graveside service and, the family being pretty poor, had not had money for the best mortician in town. That poor kids face and head looked like something out of a horror movie...and we were marched past it as ritual called for. It was horrible but got worse. As they began to close the casket the family went beserk and started flinging themselves on top of the casket and as it was being lowered into the ground they were literally jumping in after it...and the sound was terrifying. They were pushing and shoving and fighting and I don't know what all but those people lost their minds and there was 12 of us there, 8-10 years old and decked out in our Belk Gallant Cub Scout gear watching the damndest spectacle I have ever seen to this date. I will promise you it made an impression on me to this day...I am very cautious around firearms in part due that experience. It was a LOOOOOOTTTTTT for a 9 year old...hell, it was a lot for my 33 year old father LOL....

1. Firearm safety is important. Like TK & Mike said “If you ain’t safe, you out.”
2. Why didn’t they have a closed casket service?
3. How messed up was the brother after that? There is no way he didn’t have serious psychiatric issues after something like that.

It was bad LOL. I relay that story from time to time while hunting with someone...it really made an impression on me.

The lord only knows. It was, at that time, common in the south to have an open casket graveside service. They were ALWAYS crazy but this was a child and he was seriously disfigured....why they chose to do it is anyone's guess....it was a mess.

They took him out of school almost immediately afterwards and they moved from the area shortly after so I have no idea but I can't imagine he did not have serious issues. They were very close...the older brother was about 13 and the younger brother thought the sun and moon rose and set in his behind. Their dad was, typical of the deep south in the early 70's, a mean drunk and the older brother protected the younger one from most of that. I doubt seriously if the older brother did not have some serious issues as he grew up....hopefully not but they both had a long row to hoe and when this happened the older one's row got far rockier I imagine....

I’m not questioning the need for it. I’m questioning the nick picking.
Laws have to be nit picky because people will find a loophole if they aren't.
If you tell them to wear an orange hat they will claim to be jewish and wear the smallest yarmulke they can find. Tell them they can take it off in a tree stand and they will put a stool at the base of a tree.

I mainly hunt public land (bow hunting only) which Dosent require you to wear orange. When I’m walking to my stand before daylight or after sunset, I always keep my head light on. Even if it’s a full moon and you can see pretty good. Some people are idiots and will shoot at sounds, or a silhouette. I’m not get hit with a rage broadhead bc I didn’t let them know I’m a human. Maybe I’m half retarded, but that ain’t one way I wanna go out.

I'm questioning the need for orange. It's a stupid rule. I'd like to see statistics showing how many hunters got killed/injured where orange truly would have saved them. Not cases where a bullet travelled almost a mile where the shooter couldn't have seen the victim, orange or not. It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Other ways the rule is ridiculous. I can hunt all morning on my property where I'm required to wear orange. Then, walk to my truck, put my rifle away, and go for a leisurely stroll on that same property - no orange required. I'm in no different circumstances than I was 2 minutes ago, yet now, magically, I'm safer because I'm not "hunting".
Mandatory orange on private property is ridiculous.

Or a orange mesh made by victoria's secret. Or "invisble" orange by mossy oak.
I don't have any problem with the rule. I imagine first responders appreciate not having to respond to scenes where a nephew accidentally shoots his uncle while hunting after the thanksgiving dinner. Those images of distressed family members probably last a lifetime.
Sounds like OP is really just mad at a green jeans for reprimanding him. Which may of been an actual dick move since they there isn't a shortage of them in that field. Or he was just giving a heads up to be legal next time.
I don't see it as a money grab. Now the whole "primitive" weapon season thing on the other hand......

I faithfully wear orange, even though I’m hunting on private/leased land. I do, however, question the value in wearing orange when I walk out 30 min after sunset…if someone is taking a shot at me, they have to be shooting at a flashlight, or noise with light, neither case would orange help. And after a night hunt is the only time I’ve been stopped and checked for orange by WLF.

The more goof balls I see hunting with ARs the more I wear orange.
We just have a whole generation of hunters that were not introduced at an early age and hammered on by their fathers, uncles, grandpas to be safe that I am nervous.
In our club we have a guy moved in right next to us, he has a feeder that goes off really close. I wear orange in and out of stand, and use a light if low light, I have no idea who is back there.

I wear my orange vest and cap in and out on private land. I had 4 deer walk by me the other day while wearing it and they were the none wiser. Just stay still and all is good.
