What did BK see during 2021 bowl practice to make him not retain Raymond?

At the time the general consensus was Raymond was a no doubt keeper from the old staff but after watching bowl prep BK let him go. It makes you wonder what did he see to make the decision

I’m more puzzled by what he saw in Steeples.

If I remember right, Raymond didn’t want to wait until after the bowl to speak with CBK

If I remember correctly, Aranda had to bring in another guy to coach the secondary when Raymond was here. I guess Aranda saw that something was wrong as well.

The talk and feeling around here was that he had a bad attitude and wasn’t a cultural fit for what BK was trying to build. (No inside info though)

Someone on the coaches changes board yeserday said that BK offered Raymond a 1-year "prove it" deal and he opted instead for the longer UF deal.

That kinda tracks with the initial "Raymond's staying" chatter when BK initially started putting his staff together, but who knows.

No, it wasn't. His last two seasons had horrible results. 2020 was the worst pass defense I ever remember at LSU including this season. 2021 was only marginally better than this season.

People who wanted to keep him want that because of his recruiting, which many said was dropping off a bit toward the end. There was also some talk about him wanting a DC position. Here is what the passing defense in terms of yards per game looked like under Raymond. He was inconsistent at best.

2012 - #35 @ 214.6 YPG
2013 - #19 @ 205.1 YPG
2014 - #3 @ 164.8 YPG
2015 - #56 @ 224.3 YPG
2016 - #18 @ 192.5 YPG
2017 - #19 @ 188.8 YPG
2018 - #30 @ 201 YPG
2019 - #51 @ 222.1 YPG
2020 - #127 @ 323 YPG
2021 - #91 @ 248.8 YPG

The last two seasons for comparison

2022 - #45 @ 217.2 YPG
2023 - #105 @ 253.8 YPG

Raymond felt entitled to stay on and get promoted. He thought he should end up as DC eventually.

The plan was to purge it all. Brad Davis was retained because he wasn't considered part of the old regime. Everyone else got the boot.

Aranda coached 4 years here and Raymond coached 9. Raymond was great until Pelini got here

This ^^^^

I've heard mixed reviews at best on Raymond but I think the hire of Steeples was questioned from jump and the reviews were more on the negative side than mixed.

So in other words I was not as butt hurt or shocked by not retaining Raymond as some were and obviously still are, I just think the decision on who to replace him with looks like a bad one.

I acknowledge it, and also acknowledge that Pelini damn near ruined careers over his terrible defense. Blake Baker almost didn’t stand a chance

Steeples was a high school coach when we hired him. Utterly ridiculous to give him the chance to follow up Cooper and Raymond

I'd say 5 but I guess that is not really easily quantifiable. Here is my incredibly subjective grading scale for Raymond. 2 terrible (90-last), 2 mediocre (50-90) (which would have been more than acceptable with this offense), 1 good (31-50), 3 Very good (16-30), 1 Great (1-15).

While I am not an advocate (as though my advocacy matters about any of this ) of rehiring Raymond, I would not be terribly upset by it either. I suspect his tenure at Florida has given him a little perspective.

The general consensus was that he wasn’t replaceable, was a good on field coach, that he built “DBU”, and was one of if not the best recruiter in the country. All of those things were wrong, and most of them had been obvious for several years if not longer.

So Kelly didn’t necessarily need to see anything in bowl practice. Raymond was entrenched and probably seen as part of the house cleaning or reset that needed to happen.

Kelly didn't quite understand LA recruiting when he started this job.

His M.O. made a 180 within a year, and I think he now understands the importance of being able to recruit this state. His actions have backed that up.

Corey Raymond may not a Bill Belichik-level defensive coach, but if he can get DBs into the building, that is most of the battle.
