. I fly a lot for work and have heard horror stories about fountain pens vomiting ink during pressure changes.

No idea if that is true or an old wive's tale so I will shut up and listen.

It can definitely happen. The cure is to top off the ink before your flight. If it's not full, the air in the chamber can expand and push ink out. Or, you can put it in your luggage inside of a sealed container. I've seen some pen containers that claim to be air/water tight for this very reason. Never used one though. I have a small glass jar that I keep several pens in when I travel.

I took up the hobby of making them. Mainly to give away for various gifts. But I Have sold quite a few.

Sanford Uniball Gel Grip is a great pen. I do not like click pens. They get pushed open at bad times and when they leak, the ink is not contained like it would be in the cap of these pens.

OTOH, if you want a particular style of pen, contact a local penmaker and have one made.
There are a lot of pen turners in this area. Look up the Bayou Woodturners and discuss your preferences with a member. A lot of those guys make and donate pens to support our troops and your pen would go to producing those pens rather than some foreign company.

I have had them leak a few times when flying. None that was major but enough to be kind of a pain when you go to write after and nothing a little wiping with a paper towel couldn’t solve.
I still write notes and to do list and having a good pen makes me much more efficient and it’s a small pleasure to write with a good pen. You do get comments a lot as people will notice so it’s a good ice breaker conversation piece too.

My favorite pen is the one that writes when I try to use it.

I have somewhat of a pen obsession. I’m always searching for the perfect one. I use to like Uniball when I was younger but the ink would smear. Currently pilots g-2 or v-5 are the gold standard

Buy a nice, restored vintage pen. Parker or Shaffer.

Off topic but this comment reminded of this meme I thought was pretty funny

GOAT. Have one. Quit bringing it to work because of all the peasants who tried to walk away with it not knowing, or knowing, what kind of pen it was.

I like both Lamy and Kaweco, good German engineering. The Lamy 2000 (fountain pen) is one of my favorites. Papier Plume in the French Quarter has a nice selection of pens, paper, and ink. I always stop by when I’m in town.

My only qualm with that pen is that is uses ink cartridges which are indeed convenient but at least with Montblanc the difference between using bulk ink and cartridge ink is night and day. That said I am not a fountain pen aficionado so I don't know if this is conventional wisdom or just the rantings of a single user with a single data point.

I should point out the difference IME is the bulk ink flows much more smoothly because it appears to but lower viscosity. Something you should definitely get more learned opinions on vs mine.

Say what you will. I carry a nice pen (I have several) every day and cannot even begin to count the compliments I have received when I pull it out to sign a tab.

My dad left his Mont Blanc at an Ihop back in the day doing this.

There's nothing better in the world than feeling a smooth writing pen.
