I had no idea this rule existed.

One of the NFL's most obscure rules could have made an appearance just before halftime of the Thanksgiving Packers-Lions game.
That rule is the fair catch free kick, which allows any team to attempt a field goal after a fair catch, with the kicker getting a running start and without the other team being allowed to try to block it.

We practiced that to close practice every Thursday in High School

Anyone who has paid attention even a little should have seen this done in the past.

Neil Racker tried one from like 70 one time. I believe he pushed it.

What’s the reason for this rule?
Posted on 11/23/23 at 11:45 pm to JukeLeft
To encourage 80 yard FG attempts

The 1 point safety is even more obscure.

If the rule makers want to encourage long fields goal should they should make a FG worth 3 points if the ball is placed inside the 40 yard line, 4 points is the ball is placed between the 40-50 yard line and 5 points if the ball is place beyond the 50.
If this ^^^^ was done scoring for football would no longer have a gap between a 3 point FG and a 6 point TD

Yea but then we’d be playing soccer.

It’s one of the oldest rules in football.
A couple of reasons you never see it:
1. Punt returners seldom fair catch a ball within a kicker’s effective range.
2. If the kicking team misses, they surrender possession at the spot of the fair catch. The potential juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

Make a fair catch kick 4 or 5 points instead of 3, and you might see some attempts.

I seem to remember a Cowboys game, where Rafael Septien had one. Believe he missed.
Only time I remember seeing it; they lined up at the line of scrimmage, and he basically did a kickoff attempt at the FG.
