Reminds me of another obscure rule in the NFL.

The Dropkick

“ Believe it or not, the dropkick remains a legal maneuver in the National Football League today. It still exists in the NFL's official rule book. Rule 3, Section 18, Article 1, Item 1 defines the dropkick as, "a kick by a player who drops the ball and kicks it as, or immediately after, it touches the ground."

It’s one of the oldest rules in football.

A couple of reasons you never see it:

1. Punt returners seldom fair catch a ball within a kicker’s effective range.

2. If the kicking team misses, they surrender possession at the spot of the fair catch. The potential juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

10 years ago, the obvious situation, 4 seconds left in the half. Harballs gives it a try with Phil Dawson.

They mention that the last successful fair catch free kick was by Ray Wersching in 1976 when he was with the Chargers (most people associate Wersching with the 49ers).

Only been about 4000 NFL games played since 2008. And none have been successful. Easy to overlook a missed field goal attempt that only happens once ever 1000 games or so.
