Doing a pool and have an area between my garage and outdoor kitchen that is about 700ft. Has both drainage and irrigation in place. Gets about 4-6 hours of sun daily. House faces north.

Main goal is just a nice place to have kids play, sit and just have green space before pool area. Looking at zoysia- empire, zeon or Bermuda but would be TifTuf due to better shade tolerance.

Honda Rotary push mower is the plan for now. Want to keep it shorter at <2 HOC.
I want good foot feel, lower maintenance, can likely cut it every 5 days at peak summer, but no every 3 day cutting.

Woerner seems to be the only place to find those varieties. Any other places I can call? Suggestions?

Pic is from before pool build. I had st Aug in this space, it did well just want something I can get a lower HOC with.
Yes I sod cut 4k ft of st Aug and moved to the back of my yard in area that was just Bahia weed grass growing!

Thanks.

I have zoysia palisades from Woerner and it's awesome. Very plush, like walking on carpet. It does grow faster than centipede. It has not struggled along the north sides of my fence or house. Highly recommend.

You can't beat Bermuda for foot traffic, and yes you can get away with cutting it every five days with a 1.5 - 2" HOC.

Learn how to spray some PGR on it to regulate growth.

I missed this:

You'd want zoysia. There is a good chance the bermuda can get thin with 4-6 hours of sunlight. We have zeon at my office. Very thick and very soft.

Agreed. I have a small patch of my Tifway bermuda that only sees about that much sunlight per day and it's the thinnest area of my entire bermuda lawn.

The studies on the TifTuf and talking to the farms seems that it can get away with about that much sun. My only concern is being able to keep it low enough with a rotary on a 5 day schedule.

I like the zeon a lot. But not sure about a source in the gulf coast? Mostly palisades and empire at every farm! Would love some help finding it.

I’ve got Tifway 419 hybrid bermuda in my backyard and Palisades Zoysia in the front yard. Also sodded my parents in Empire Zoysia. They all are nice, but I’ve got a great appreciation for how well that Palisades Zoysia performed last summer when it was hot and not raining. That stuff is tuff, durable, and looks great even when everything else was wilting. It doesn’t have to be cut as often as bermuda. As others noted that bermuda likes a lot of sun.

If it gets 4-6 hours in the summer, would that be enough for Bermuda?

I think Quality Sod has Empire.

I'm not familiar with TifTuf.

It is. Just had some zoysia put down and I love the look and feel.

I was surprised it was cheaper than st aug

Anyone familiar with emerald zoysia?

Woerner in Gulfport has it… which I recently learned is a different brother of the family name. Different farms and grass.

I only need 2 pallets so may drive over in the morning and get back and throw it down before the rain!!

I got it very level and sloped slightly towards my drain. Should be good to go.

Preped dirt

My dad ripped out the St Aug they had when they built the house 8 years ago and put in empire zoysia this spring

It’s like walking on carpet not that crunch you get with st aug or centipede

Once my centipede inevitably has to be replaced I’m going empire zoysia

Any reason going Emerald vs Palisades? I love my Palisades Zoysia.

Should be able to get Palisades locally at Woerner, although they usually have to schedule the delivery to their place. Two pallets of grass is heavy AF.

Prep looks good.

Nothing against palisades, my neighbor actually has it, very plush but he keeps it about 3” HOC. Will be a game time decision depending on availability, the rain has already started here. I just need something down so my kids won’t have a mud hole out the back door all winter!

Thanks for all the input, will post the winner !

Emerald zoysia is totally different than Empire or palisades. It's very fine and was popular a few decades ago. I'm sure it has it's place though.

Get the grass you want, you'll live with it a while.

Boy that’s the truth. Some of this Zoysia looks different. Some varieties have a blade that resembles Centipede and some of the others have a fine blade that resembles a grass one would see on a golf course. The Palisades looks very similar to Centipede but it grows with the blades reaching straight up and it’s thicker, softer to walk on, and mine is still green like spring time right now. The Empire Zoysia I put down in my parents yard has a smaller blade than Palisades and prefers to be cut shorter. My Palisades seems to prefer to be cut higher. Zoysia is a slow growing grass, but once it gets rooted in good it starts to spread nicely. I have Tifway 419 in the backyard and my Palisades is starting to grow into my Bermuda.

Georgia resident. Had a similar backyard issue with limited light (4-6 hours/day). Bermuda that was original to the home when we bought it thinned out over the years due to limited light. We had backyard regraded and zeon zoysia installed about a year and a half and performing well. Great grass.

I have an 10x 20 area that gets 4-5 hours sun due to high fence on east side and neighbors tree. Was all messed up by doing work in the backyard by pool. I went cheap and put down bermuda on my own. It's growing ok right now considering the time of year, but if it doesn't hold up next year im going artificial and wont look back.
