Larry was probably the greatest actor of all time.

Oh, I know. The voice is just so soothing haha

For all the work he's done, I think the only 2 movies I've seen that involved Olivier are Marathon Man and A Bridge Too Far.

I made it to episode 3 of this series. It really is fantastic. I'm excited to get to the Pacific portions.

Nothing tops it for a documentary about WWII.

It is a very solid series. However, it is rather dated because there was certain amounts of information from both the Soviet Union and the Allies that had yet to be declassified (such as Bletchley Park) when the series went into production in 1971-72. It was also very Euro-centric and didn't focus as much time on the Pacific, China, or the Burma-India theaters. As a mainstream documentary series, however, there is none better.

There are YouTube channels that have overtaken it as far as content - the most obvious being World War Two. Since September 1, 2018, they have been publishing weekly episodes chronicling the war in real time, week-by-week. They are currently in November 1944. They also published two documentary series on the Pearl Harbor attacks and D-Day landings that I feel are definitive documentaries on those two events.

You can check out their channel here:

And here is their Pearl Harbor documentary:

And their D-Day documentary:

gives me an excuse to recommend Q Planes again

as far as the OP goes, may I echo the sentiment that WAW is the GOAT series on WWII, especially on the European front

Wuthering Heights is an amazing film overshadowed because it came out in 1939. Olivier is great in it. I highly recommend it.

One Pearl Harbor documentary I found very was one that was trying to prove that many of the torpedo hits on Battleship Row was actually from the infamous midget subs. Wish I remembered the name of it.

That's me with "World War II in Colour". I've "watched" all 12 episodes several times. Usually, i last about 10 minutes before i'm out. My wife makes fun of me because i put WW2 and shows about nazis on tv to take a nap.

Its almost as good (or equally as good) as PBS’ Vietnam: The 10,000 Day War

Yeah, but is it narrated by someone as good as Peter Thomas?

And it’s narrated by Laurence Olivier!

I’ll allow it.

Great series is an understatement.

I first watched it in my early teens I think. We had some friends from the Netherlands (all my grandparents and mom where born there) who lived through the occupation.

I was asked to turn it off as it was too much for them. My impression is that they may have been associated with the underground. Regardless, it wasn't a pleasant time for them.

The intro alone is memorable.

I have. Saw it several times on TV during late 70s early 80s. Well worth the watch. I agree the interviews were an added bonus.

Seen(slept to it) it multiple times.

Lately I have been dozing off to a youtube channel that has a playlist called The Pacific War Week by Week. The first 95 episodes are free.
