Ford came out with a 7.3L cam-in-block gasser V8 a few years ago. CGI cast iron block, aluminum heads, built with a lot of extra metal to reinforce the block. There really isn't anything better for heavy-duty use than cubic inches.

It's not branded as a Dodge.

It's made by Stellantis, which is the same company that makes Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Alpha (which has some cool cars) and Fiat (total shite).

It looks like the 7.3L and 6.2L are both being replaced by one 6.8L V8 engine in the pickups while the 7.3L moves onto Marine and Bus uses. They are smart to use the pushrod 7.3 as a basis for this instead of the higher costs 6.2L V8.

I'm excited to see it. The HD gas V8s from Ford and GM are some of the most reliable engines you can buy today. They just suck down an insane amount of fuel.

Wonder if the 6.8L pushrod motor is compact enough to fit in the Mustang.....

If the 7.3L fits then so should the 6.8

I read yesterday that one of the Ram EV options will be the range extender which will use the Pentastar v6 as a generator for the battery. Totally unconnected to the drive train. Supposed range of 600 miles.

Not really.

Just about every high-output engine calls for premium fuel.

The 4.7 was a good engine, but not 540HP good.

So it's like a big Chevy Volt (or a locomotive). The electric motor has a lot of instant torque, so it's great for the boat ramp. The shortcoming has always been range.

So why use the thirsty old 3.6L V6 and not a smaller displacement 4 banger? All it does is charge the battery. It doesn't power the truck.

Yep. And they could get up to 14 mpg in the Grand Cherokee if you were on a flat highway, wasn't carrying extra passengers, and were very careful with the throttle.

I've rented Rams, Durangos, and a Charger a few times with the 5.7L HEMI.

I've always liked the engine response and throttle mapping on those. Power was always on tap, and the exhaust note was very nice. They all felt more powerful than the horsepower numbers would suggest.

Its overkill for the job but the pentestar is also their Iron Horse. They put it in everything.
