The first generation of those things were massive piece of crap. I lost track of how many main seals ours spit out on the highway.

I don't think it got much better as they matured.

The 3.0L V6 Ram Ecodiesel? It was crap, and then it had emissions issues too.

But it may be slightly better than the short lived 3.0L V6 Diesel that Ford poached from Jaguar to use in the F-150.

That doesn't surprise me. The operating and maintenance cost on those things was insane.

Dodge doesn't make Ram trucks anymore.

They don't put ford badges on a Lincoln, either.

It's still a Dodge.

There's only one half ton diesel motor out there, and it's the Duramax 3.0L inline 6 from General Motors. I hear very good things about it.

It's an oversquare I-6 turbo diesel engine with iron cylinder liners and a forged crankshaft. It's already at an advantage over the V6 competitors sourced from Europe. A relative of mine has one in a pickup and he seems to love it.

The only thing about it that concerns me is that the engine was originally designed for Isuzu/GMC cab over trucks, so the valve train is in the back of the motor....so that's going to eventually be more of a headache to service since there's less access back there in a traditional truck with a hood. General Motors could barely fit that longer engine in their light duty trucks.

I'm a little annoyed that you still can't get one in a Yukon, Tahoe, or Suburban if you get the off road package. It's frustrating because that's probably the best light duty truck engine right now.

If they ever made that engine more widely available, I'd probably consider trading my Toyota for a GMC.

The Ford 6.2L in the Super Duty trucks was a good, reliable motor (far more reliable than their Powerstroke engine lineup) It just wasn't powerful enough for heavier pickups though. Their new Ford 7.3L V8 is pretty good after they've worked the bugs out of it.

I miss the Triton V10 in the early 2000s super duty trucks.

That engine was a beast

This new fad of replacing V8’s with turbo-V6’s is lame as f*ck.

That's why the 700hp blown V8 Raptor R exists.

BTW an in-line 6 is arguably a better HP motor than a V8 due to the inherent lack of 1st and 2nd order vibrations without the added reciprocating mass of a harmonic damper/balance shaft they rev faster and are easier to build for a higher redline. Not that matters much when you are pounding it with boost.

Why aren’t there more high-displacement V6’s? 6+ liter, for example?

You buy anything Ram without a Cummins in it, you're a fool.

A YouTuber just put together a custom 4V version of the 6.8L Triton V10. Unfortunately the balance shaft and split-pin crankshaft meant those engines never had a chance at making power with aftermarket support the 4.6/5.4's got.

Cummins

Loud, and overrated.

The Scorpion 6.7 is better, as is the Duramax.
