So for as long as I’ve been hunting in Louisiana you could only shoot one buck and/or one doe on the same day. Just not 2 of each. My question is, if we are given 3 antlerless tags, 2 buck tags & 1 either sex for the season, what does it matter to the state or anyone if we do it on the same day or spread it out throughout the season. Is it just tradition more than anything or is there any real purpose to this law?

It’s really a carry over from trying to minimize how many deer are taken. If I’m sitting in a stand and it’s prime rut I’m not shooting a doe knowing good and well a goo buck may be around that same day.
It just forces honest people to let deer walk, and the dishonest well they just always do what they do.

Same reason you are given 4 mallards a day for 60(ish) days for a season. You can’t kill all 240 in1 day.

If you have DMAP tags you can shoot whatever the hell you want. Frick the laws

It's just to get the clock ticking on the spread of when you take them.

It’s the same purpose of the law that requires you to have a dog in your possession if you are hunting coons at night with an artificial light source. But without artificial light (e.g. moonlight with a night vision, or a thermal scope) you don’t need a dog. And don’t think about using a 17HMR at night, but 22LR and 22WMR is perfectly legal.

Georgia allows you to fill all deer tags in one day.
DMAP allows you to fill all doe tags in one day.
At one time, and it may still be this way, Florida allowed two bucks per day.

It’s all about who’s boss with a smidge of scientific justification.

Correct, state allotted limit. If the hunting club you’re in allows. Mine doesn’t.

Laws/rules, man.

Same BS in certain areas of Louisiana. We hunt in an archery only club but state rules say if there is an active bucks only gun season, archery has to follow bucks only as well. Really minimizes our chances to harvest does. I miss the days of archery either sex from Oct 16 to Feb 15.

LDWF wants to force landowners to use their DMAP or other programs.

DMAP is a total pain in the arse and not worth it. It's easier to just not shoot hardly any does.

Because how many people would load the back of their truck with 3 does and 2 bucks (4 pt and 5Pt) opening day then continue to shoot deer the rest of the year.

It is so they can somewhat regulate how many are taken.

Yes you can still kill over the limit, but this slows it down.

I use this reasoning for opening weekend of dove season. Kill about 15 days worth in one weekend.

I work out of state often, and work with guys from other states a lot as well doing O&G work.

A lot of guys are stunned when I tell them...

I think it should be 1 buck, 2 does, and one either in LA... 4 total. We always had a lease in TX as a kid because there weren't many deer around our area of LA. The counties we hunted were 4 deer (2 bucks and 2 doe) counties, and other counties in TX are only 1 buck counties.

In other words, kill your does, but make those buck tags count.

Louisiana Deer Hunters group on facebook makes me sick with the countless small bucks people post so proudly on there.
