Life is tough and thank God I had tough coaches. They helped me realize that toughness and perseverance are THE things that separate achievers from underachievers. There is a reason Dale Brown never win a Natty. There is a reason Nick Saban is the most successful coach is college football. There is a reason that the super majority of their players absolutely love and adore them.

Sounds like you probably could have used a Bobby Knight type of person in your life.

I’ve been up and down with Knoght regarding his personality. If you want to be pushed to be your best , he’s your guy.

He had a TV show to where 16 kids competed for a roster spot at Texas Tech. He seemed much more caring and personable in the show. I kind of changed my mind on him after seeing that. At times he was really hurt knowing he had to cut a player that really tried and wasn’t good enough.

Yeah a few of his players thought he was a bully. But the majority of them respected him and loved him for pushing them to be their best. Did you see recently when he went to an Indiana game and his former players hugged him and were happy to see him? Is he the rare bully most people love and only a few hate? He pushed his kids beyond their limits and they ALL reaped the rewards. Not wanting to call him a great man is fine. But he was a great coach. And left his mark on the game. And lived life his own way. And will be remembered. A life well lived.

There exists in our society men who believe life is hard, someone will always be up in your arse for something, and that you must be able to handle any abuse that time, people, and life will throw at you. Coaches, especially Bobby Knight, lived believing this. And so he expected everyone to execute with perfection so as to not become a failure.

fricking pussies, it's amazing how many people in sports journalism are completely retarded when it comes to Bobby Knight. Heard a morning sports show host in K.C. give the same kind of take as the OP. He claimed Knight never won anything after the 1970s. Knight won two national championships and an Olympic gold medal in the 80s alone.

His job wasn't to hold the hand of everyone who played for him. His job was to prepare those players for life after college, basketball or no basketball. He understood life kicks you in the balls quite often and to be successful you have to be able to take those kicks and get back up. No one makes any kind of life for themselves by going fetal after every moment of adversity. I've got two words for every person who thinks Knight was a heartless bastard--Landon Turner. Do some research into everything Bob Knight did for him after his automobile accident that left him paralzed.

He was a complicated man with a lot of stories out there both pro and con. One that hasn't been mentioned is that Larry Bird signed with Indiana and two weeks later quit to go home and drive a garbage truck in French Lick. Bird wasn't exactly a shrinking violet.

Most coaches wish they had a graduation rate with their players as high as Coach Knight did. He knew that the majority of them would never play in the NBA and a free education and hard work would lead them to future success off the court when their eligibility was over.
