My 14 year old loves hunting but he now wants to get into bow hunting.

I used to bow hunt a little before he was born (never really my thing) but i would rather hunt with a rifle. i have an old PSE that he shoots in the yard but he is wanting his own bow.

What are some legit but inexpensive (sub $500) bows that i could let him check out?

He wants a Mathews because some of his school buddies hunt with them. I just don't see paying that kind of money unless i'm sure he is going to enjoy bow hunting. I figure on buying him something to use this season and next season then maybe a nicer bow.

Try one of the Bear RTH packages. I believe they are fully adjustable on draw weight and length.

This will grow with him:

Diamond Bows

My son learned on a similar one of Diamond bows.
They are inexpensive but great bows.

There are other Diamond bows as well that are adjustable like this one.

If he’s shooting the pse now I would challenge him to use it and become proficient with it and kill a deer with it and if he still likes it then get him a matthews. If he really wants the matthews now see how much of it he’s willing to pay out of his pocket.
If he’s fourteen I wouldn’t focus on buying a youth bow because most bows now have enough adjustment to accommodate any more growth he will have.

My son is about to turn 14. Same situation last year, he was dying for a bow. I explained that he'll be growing so much in the next few years that we would get him a good adjustable bow. We got him a Bear Royale. You can easily adjust draw weight & length. Around $300 if i remember correctly. If he's still into it in 4 or 5 years we'll get him a higher end bow. He absolutely loves it by the way.

I have thought about just making him hunt with the old PSE i just haven't decided yet what to do.

That is kind of what i was worried about. He is 6'1 175lbs, if he grows the next 2 years like he did the last 2 i'm sure he will need another bow.

I second the Bear bows for starters. My son bought a Bear Legit, and the whole set up for around $500. We got that one since you can adjust the length and weight.

I’d get an elite basin package at the best deal i could find.

Sounds like he’s a growing kid. The draw length is adjustable from 16-30” and the weight is adjustable from 20-70 pounds. It still has winners choice strings and machined aluminum limb pockets and cam mods.

+1 on Diamond as well. Machined in North Louisiana as well. Very good value for what you get. Bow Tech and Matthews are great bows and if he keeps it up I'd go with one of those, but Diamond is a great bow.

A family member of mine was actually the founder of Diamond. Sold the company to Bow Tech for the rights to build Diamond and Bow Teach. Machines the Ravin crossbows as well.

Thanks for all of the great info, I’ll take him to check out each one suggested and let him pick out the one he prefers.

This is what I started bow hunting with (funny enough after also learning in the back yard with an old hand me down PSE) around the same age. Killed just fine at a great price.
