Always tie in to the tree. Hardest part is climbing but even then I strap into the tree at the top. Lock ons are the worst. But I'm alway tied into the tree for those the whole climb up and down.

Got to have sides on mine, I sleep like a baby in a tree stand.

Best sleep of your life, but tie up.

It’s not very difficult to stay tied off while climbing with the right strap. It’s definitely slower, but better safe than sorry.

Safety tip
I have always added a small rope to tie the top part of the climbing stand to the bottom part.
But with one rope, if the bottom part slips and falls down a little, it is often crooked and hard [ie. unsafe] to get it straight.
I now have 2 ropes tied between the top and bottom of the climber. This helps to keep the bottom level if it slips down a little.

Also, you don’t have to get 30 ft up in the air. 12-15 ft will do just fine if you use cover and don’t allow yourself to be silhouetted with the skyline

I rarely go higher than 8-10 feet. I only go to camp because the food is so good. I couldn't actually give a shite less about killing a deer.

I always have my Muddy harness on when I'm using my climber. It's worth a little extra effort to know you're not gonna fall 15+ ft out of the tree.

Thirdhand Archery stabilizer straps will serve that purpose as well as make the top and bottom feel like they are affixed to the tree once at hunting height. Totally changed my anxiety level in my Summit. Best $24 you'll ever spend.

I fell from 12 feet flat on my back. I promise you it is not fun. Use your safety strap. I feel a long time before safety straps were a thing.

Had a 2nd cousin that fell out of a tree stand a few years ago. He hit everything on the way down and was out cold before he hit the ground.
Multiple surgeries and years of therapy have him walking somewhat normally. He still hunts but not in a tree. His parents/grandparents spent years traveling to assist him, pretty much 2 years nonstop tapering down to normal.
Ruined him physically in just his mid 20’s.
So yes, all you folks stay safe out there!!

I just can't even imagine climbing without being secured to the tree. I've gotten a bit off balance a few times even with my lineman on, and it gets the heart pumping.

Never happen. If I feel anything remotely close to a shite working up, I don't get on a stand. I stay back at camp and eat leftovers.

Same. I invested in some 8mm tethers with a distel hitch. It's very easy to carry two of them. If I have to go around a limb I pull the second out so I stay tied off.

Who down voted the whole first part of the thread?
That's some next level hate to down vote a thread about being safe in the stand.

I’m convinced there’s someone that shows up just to downvote every initial post on the OB. I’ve noticed it time and time again, even on simple posts where someone just asks a question.
