I ditched the safety strap when in my climber and went with a safety rope with a prusik knot. I use 11mm climbing rope for the main and 6 or 7 mm for the prusik.

It is much faster, easier and honestly I feel safer with it.

Every lock on has a lifeline attached, normally added after the sticks but before the stand is even hung.

As a hunters ed instructor I get a publication each year of major hunting accidents. By far most of the bad ones involve someone falling out of a tree.

I’m convinced there’s someone that shows up just to downvote every initial post on the OB. I’ve noticed it time and time again, even on simple posts where someone just asks a question.

Some just are Contrarian by nature. Anything and everything is disagreement due to their apparently genetic inability to agree with anything. Some of the most miserable people you will ever encounter. (I just walk away when I recognize one, don’t even bother to acknowledge them as present even).

Other down voters may be the idiots who believe they are improving “discussion” by perceived oppositional pov(as if only conflict to be resolved results in continuing discussions).

And then there’s the emotionally stunted preteen trolls… we all are familiar with these.

Personally, I never started to place any values on either up/down votes so by ignoring votes I lose nothing. An upvote and a $10 bill will get ya a cup of coffee.

I've fallen twice. Back in the 70's. No one wore safety restraints and the climbers like the Baker Climber were death traps. Thankful I was not really injured. I don't leave the ground unless I'm tethered in. No excuse to not wear one these days. they are comfortable and easy to use. Stay safe ladies and gentlemen

My dads friend years ago had the bottom piece of a climbing stand fall 15 ft and catch the tree before hitting the ground. He let go and fell down to it feet first, his tibula went through the bottom of his foot and got stuck in the hole of the expanded metal of the stand. He had to pull the bone out, then fall another 8 feet. Then crawled half a mile out of the woods on his hands and knees. This was before cell phones

Truly horrific

I’m 47 and growing up we hunted out of home made baker style climbing stands and home made loc-on style with screw in tree steps and never wore harness and even with my dad and uncles and grandpa watching me and knowing I was doing it. Amazingly I never got hurt but I personally know of several people who have fell. My granpaw was in his 60s and lost his grip on a ladder stand and fell and broke his back was in a brace and in bed for several months.
Several stories of people i know who have fell involved something like “ I just went up real quick to pull the stand” “so and so hunted it the day before and it didn’t fall” “ it wasn’t that high so I figured it was ok and I could catch myself”
Maybe it’s just old age but several times I have caught myself thinking about taking a short cut either climbing down or repositioning and I stop and tie off.
One thing I have found that helps is I wear a harnes that’s like a rock climbing style with two line mans loops on it so I can stay 100% tied off and it’s easy and comfortable to wear. I maintain pretty tight tie off and have a knife always in my pocket if I need to cut and shimmy down.

I just started climbing the last few years so I just take my time. I do hunt from 1-2 lock ons that I need to add a safety line on.

I hung a lock on a few weeks back and used the lineman's belt for the first time. It was rather interesting but felt secure.

My wife really worries about this. I run a safety rope on my ladder stand during bow season. When rifle opens I’m hunting out of a box stand I built myself. It’s so over built Herman Johnson could do up-downs in it and it wouldn’t move
