Most people leaving Louisiana go somewhere not too far from family so not surprising.
Most people are scared to move away because of family. I love the excuse of family as the context its used in normally is meant that they just love their family when in fact its because you dont have daycare costs.
i hate those people.

SWLA is starting to see a nice pocket of Hispanic residents.

After moving 8 hours away from Baton Rouge I now find that a majority of my vacations include going to Baton Rouge for family obligations or passing through Baton Rouge on my way to the beach.
It is not ideal.

Depends on how you want your kids to grow up.

some parts of coastal Mississippi have embraced the positive qualities of Louisiana culture
Or they were French settlements as well but you do you and think they somehow recently changed.

We can’t wait to move to Eastern TN.

Agreed. If I’m leaving it’s for mountains or beaches, not more of the same shite we have here.

I may be an outlier, but I like Louisiana. Not the gov or the welfare state. If we could get rid of both, Louisiana would flourish. And it’s a pretty state. We probably have more natural resources to survive than other states, a lot to do, and the food can’t be beat. The people are welcoming. There’s “soul” here you don’t find elsewhere.
I can understand a young person wanting out, though. For various reasons. My daughter travels a good bit, and I’ve encouraged her to look around bc of opportunities. She always comes home and doesn’t want to leave. In fact, when they went to college, I told them to date men who lived away from here and get out. Both failed in that dept and are here, one married. When I retire I’m thinking of MS. Picayune, Poplarville, Carriere, and thereabouts. It’s fast growing with transplants, and I have friends there. Not far from home and close to those I love, but out of a failing state. East TN, north AL also sound nice and I’ve researched. But don’t know anyone in those areas, and at 54, feel too old to start over.

Don’t forget that car insurance rates are much lower in Mississippi.

Don’t get me wrong, loved Bernie the first time he ran for president, but Vermont is a whole state that chooses him to be a Senator…

It’s much easier to stay put than it is to pickup and move.

The "soul" of the state *is* the government/welfare state dependency. What does it say about your collective ability to suffocate businesses that people feel compelled to move to Mississippi? That is a bar a rat could jump over, but yeah, keep enjoying the kultur.

The OT acts like people are pouring out of the state. The state lost less than 1% of population in 2023.
While it has problems, and plenty of them, name one state that doesn’t?

I know one couple who left California to move back to La. about a year ago. They are part of our extended family.
Both were retired and found the cost of living in Ca. to be prohibitive. They bought a home on the north shore in a somewhat rural area that has 2 acres of land and a beautiful single story brick home.
When the wife and I went to visit them, one of the first things they mentioned was how cheap things were here for many of the same products, especially gasoline. They told us gas started at $6+ a gallon and went up from there. Then things like property taxes, insurances, etc. that really ate into their budget in Ca. were way cheaper here and they had more disposable income.

I'll never understand this. We have in-laws in town who are of course thrilled to see their grand baby, but they also have lives. It was not even a thought in my mind that we would rely on them on the daily for child care. Perhaps not everyone has the ideal circumstances, but I don't know how anyone can assume grand parents will just step in on the daily.
