I have a buddy in both TX and MS that have had exotics show up on their cameras. Is it legal to shoot them, none are tagged or marked.

West texas red elk by chance? Big axis?

negative. they are considered cattle and someone's property.
I actually don't know but thats food for thought. I'd blast away then shut up about it.

If a bear shits in the woods and no one sees it, did it happen?
Generally the exotics are fair game as far as I know as people don’t want them to risk breeding with local wildlife. But I’m not sure what every state law is.
ETA: there’s a difference between animals that you can capture like a cow and horse and others. I’m not sure how you realistically return something like an axis.

Fair game. Unless they are breeders in a breeder pen, they are property of the state of Texas whether high fenced or not.

It’s one of those things that’s just better not to ask.

I shot an escaped axis deer in Texas about 10 years ago. They said it was fair game.

Non native game aka exotics are considered fair game and can be legally harvested.
I believe they can be shot at any time. Ie there isn’t a season for them.

Yes exotics in Texas that are free ranging or escapes are fair game year round and pretty much any time of day. With that being said, you shoot one not on your land and obviously one you didn’t own, well that’s another rabbit hole that if caught you might be on the hook for but it’s a green light on the trigger part.

You don’t d*ck around in TX baw…
Anything on your property is legal, but don’t even think about popping one on the other side of the fence. There are varying degrees of punishment depending on how far you venture into neighboring property, weapon/no weapon etc to retrieve the animal.
If you shoot one and it hops the fence, call green jeans unless you are tight with your neighbor.

I've never in my life felt the desire to hunt an animal from India. My family has been hunting North American whitetails, muleys and elk for generations. I don't want to kill some Asian "deer".

OP said “shoot,” not “hunt.” I’d shoot ‘em for the same reason I’d shoot any other nuisance animal on my hunting property.

Quite apparent you've never eaten wild exotic "deer". Most who have will agree whitetail may not make the top 5 of venison table fare. If someone offers you a red deer hind, nilgai, axis, blackbuck, oryx, and/or sika, you'll feed your dog every packet of whitetail meat in the freezer.

Better question would be, "What is the best way to cook ______?"

Not most, more like 99.9% would not put whitetail in the top 5 of venison. Elk and moose are far far superior table fare and as you said Axis, red dear, Sambar, etc. are all more similar to Elk and moose than white tail.
Mule deer is almost always considered not as good as White tail, but elk and moose as far as North American are considered far superior.
