The Elmore facility, which recently garnered headlines for its new $1.08 billion price tag, will house 4,000 inmates upon completion. The project is currently taking up the vast majority of the $1.25 billion the Alabama Legislature allocated in 2021 for the construction of two prisons.

What's not to like about getting one prison for the cost of two?

quote:

In 2021, when approving a prison spending plan, lawmakers agreed to use design-build contracts, allowing a single entity to perform both the design and construction under a single agreement. In the more standard design-bid-build, designers and contractors are hired separately. Officials argued that design-build would save time and money. The prison legislation allows for, but does not require, design-build contracts at Elmore and Escambia, Inside Alabama Politics reported recently.

It's unbelievable how dumb this state is.

State construction projects are the MIC of Alabama. So much grift and back door money it’s not even funny. About 25% of that $1B will end up in private pockets.

Sounds like a luxury prison. Should be the bare minimum.

There are at least 100 towns in Alabama that cost less than $1B- just buy one and put a wall around it

Maybe I am too much of a conspiracy theorist but isn't this true for all government projects?

As someone who lived in Louisiana, I can completely believe it.

As we build a 140 million dollar women's prison in St. Gabriel.

In other news, several Alabama construction company owners have purchased 3rd and 4th homes.

At least someone is building prisons? That seems to be a win as DA's across the country aren't doing their jobs?

From what a trustee at Angola said to me once, he would rather be in Angola than St Landry despite it being 1/10 the population.

Angola holds 6300 prisoners. I wonder how much it would cost to build. Surely nowhere near $1B?

I've been there as a visitor and it looked pretty basic.
