I know practice more. But who has the time. I’m a 8.7 and rarely do I ever make a putt over 6 feet, nor do my buddies. But, if we could, we’d significantly reduce our scores. I’m not a bad putter, usually averaging about 30 putts/round. Barely miss several putts per round. Thoughts?

Uh, 30 putts per round sounds pretty good.

Practice 3-5 foot putts.

If you can make a 3 footer dead center consistently you’ll make more longer putts.

Are you reading grain?

Hit it within 6 feet or hope they start falling.

If you’re barely missing I’m not sure anyone can help except you may need to improve your green reading and not your stroke. 30 putts / round seems pretty solid for an 8 handicap though.

Watched a video of a guy (Doctor) talking about practice putts after you line it up. Basically he says don't take the practice putts after you line it up. Your brain image loses the line and he says you re align wrong after the practice puts.

Well that's why I bought a practice mat for the house..

Also hitting putts beyond 6 feet isn't easy even Tour players are only draining them 70% of the time... another foot and they're only hitting them 60% and from 8ft 52% ... And lets face it, you like the rest of us are amateur hours..

Well.. Considering elite putters on tour are averaging 29 putts per round you need to quit your bitchin.. Sounds like there might be another aspect of your game in which to make up a couple strokes

There is no one fix for all your putting problems, but most bad putters inside of 5’ would benefit from taking the putter back much slower than they currently do. The slower takeaway makes it easier to keep the putter on path.

Let the head weight of the putter do the work instead of over-manipulating.

I became a better putter by getting a routine and sticking to it, reading grain, and if it’s over 10’ just trying to get it in a three foot circle.

Agree with some of the other advice, but will add something I do before every round that helps me, especially if I have not played in a while. Before the round walk off 10 paces, 15 paces, and 20 paces from a flag on the flattest part of the putting green and work on finding good speed from those distances. Having good speed will give you a lot more confidence in choosing your line and hitting your line. You can even walk off the distance from your ball to the hole during your round and then think back to what that stroke felt like on the putting green.

This number could also vary depending on rounds where you are hitting more GIR also.

Be target oriented.
Practice short putts the most.
You can make more 4-6 footers.

People don’t realize how good pros are at 3,4,5,6 feet.

Most of our putting practice should be from 3-6 feet.
Circle the hole with 4 golf balls.
Place the 3 ft rom hole.
Make all 4 then place them at 4 ft, and repeat.
Process to 6 ft.

If I could average 30 putts a round, I’d be a plus handicap.

30 putts a round has you around 6 one putts. Not bad.

Make it a priority.
Go by putting green for 30 minutes twice a week.
You can do it!

Green reading plus speed. Learn those two.

Always read green to have ball enter top portion of hole. Putts breaking below hole have no chance going in.
Also during round, try to leave yourself with uphill putts. Easier to be more aggressive & play less break on uphill putts

I use a mat at home for 3-6ft putts and it has significantly helped me become more confident on the greens at those distances. Lag putting has improved as well. Learning speed and reading grain seem to be most important on the greens I play. On days when I do those two best, I mostly 2 putt, and can get several 1 putts in a row. Center face impact helps also, light grip pressure consistently.

Your putts per round are exactly where they are supposed to be. You want to improve your scores you need to put the ball closer to the hole on your approaches.
