I mean that is 8 out of 25 players that you highlighted as players that would be your juniors and seniors. I think 17 would count as several no?

Man, i know this is the sec but its just hard to believe every 1st team all conference guy we took in the transfer portal all the sudden just cant play and only on defensive side of the ball. Chestnut was a freshman all American. Speights was first team all pac 12. Alexander and Sam were 1st team southland conference. Harris was a mid season freshman all American before suspension and these dudes were getting cooked by Grambling. Meanwhile every high profile, promising guy we already had on defense looks mediocre at best with Wingo, Mason Smith, Savion Jones. Its just hard to not blame scheme and coaching for alot of it.

And CBK has also stated such. The transfer portal is nice for adding a few key players. But he does not want to live off of that portal. It’s not sustainable long-term.

Demario Tolan is still so shocking to me that he left after he was getting such high praise from Kelly.

If you giving every WR a free release and the outside WRs a large cushion, and you have your best rush linebacker standing in space 10 yards off a slot WR on 90% of the snaps, those guys aren't making us any better, unless you are going to put them in a different scheme.

Defense ranked #34 last year and #121 so far this year. Last year we had fewer returning scholarship players. Even with the additional losses of players this year, you shouldn’t expect this severe of a drop in one year during a rebuild. It’s more than the change in personnel. Anyone can see we’re playing less aggressive defense this year, and if you can’t cover well, you should pressure better.

6 of these guys are Freshmen
There have been a ton of moving parts with very little older, talented players.
They are receiving poor coaching here, and overall not being put in positions to succeed. There's no way around admitting that. At the same time, they sometimes do put themselves in the correct positions, but don't execute and follow through. They have to support each other more and hold each other accountable. This team, specifically the defense needs some serious team bonding. That starts with coaching.

This is what bothers me. No way all of these guys actually just sucked.

Or, more appropriately, recruit better. The number one in-state prospect in 2025 is a CB from Westgate. You can’t let him go to Texas just like Williams.
If we don’t recruit at a high level (esp at positions of need), the defense will not change at all. We’ll rely on shitty portal players just like this past cycle

This staff has one full recruiting class under their belts. What you see on the field has nothing to do with how Brian Kelly has recruited. Such a stupid talking point

Not all these awards are created equal.
Makhi Garner came from a better football school in a better conference with a better defense and a better S&C program. He also was a CB in high school, then again in JUCO, before even getting to ULL.
Zy Alexander was a project that was recruited to SELU off raw athleticism that played QB in high school but had the physical tools to potentially play DB. He's also about 20 lbs lighter than Garner.
Just because they may have both made a postseason award team doesn't mean their experience and skill set are equal.

maybe for some guys, but we've always had freshman DB's playing and plenty of sophomores starting.
Jay Ward played in every game as a freshman
Cordale Flott played in every game as a freshman
Derrick Singley Jr., enough said
Jacoby Stevens switched from WR to DB and was starting games at the end of his sophomore year.
Grant Delpit
Todd Harris Jr played in every game as a freshman.
Kary VIncent Jr played in every game as a freshman and started a few
Greedy Williams started every game as a redshirt freshman

There's been freshman DB's starting at this school for a long time.
We are DBU for a reason. We aren't sitting guys for 3 years and then giving them a chance to shine. They shine from day one. If they aren't starting, they are doing well on special teams while they wait their turn for guys to go the NFL so they can take their place.
Right now we have two transfers from the Southland, one who's old enough to rent a car by himself, in our secondary, and they both aren't any good.
I have no problem with Major Burns. He's been starting since he's a freshman, and he'd look a lot better if he had competent help back there.
I expect better from Sage Ryan, but he's probably better as a nickel guy instead of a CB.
Ryan Yaites needs more playing time, and so does Javien Toviano. It does us no good to get our arse whipped with two veteran players playing when we could be getting our arse whipped while getting our freshman experience.
