Silicon Valley was an underachieving mediocre show

You have an abundance of source material, on a network you can do anything on, and the end result was complete mediocrity.

A couple memes here or there. That’s it. That’s all anyone remember. The show never really figured out whether it was a comedy, faux documentary, drama, or anything. Very underwhelming. I think the lead, the annoying guy from the phone commercials, just sucked all the comedy potential out of it

It lost a it of steam when Erlich left, but I thought it was pretty consistently funny. Above average for sure.

It was a good show overall, but kind of frustrating because every single season they would follow the same formula. Every great idea works and then the whole thing craters, over and over. I get that it’s a comedy, but come on, man… let these guys get a win now and then.

Left? More like fired. Dude is an a-hole.

On top of harassing all the women on set, he had a train incident which cancelled him.

Dude was on a train harassing a woman of Persian decent. He was all drunk and trying to touch her. She rejected him. So he called fbi and said she had a bomb, but idiot was so drunk he gave the wrong train number. FBI stopped one train, then traced his cell and realized it was another train. Stopped both, but by this time he had been kicked off for drunkenness. He was arrested and defense was he is legally brain damaged.

Yeah, it’s formulaic on HBO where you can literally do anything. That’s why Eastbound & Down was so great. It didn’t keep to any formulas despite the source material being very narrow.

Is there really nobody in Hollywood that could write a comedy based on Silicon Valley? Really? Without resorting to the exact same formula each season?

Fred Armisen got like 9 seasons out of making fun of one city in the Northwest. But Silicon Valley…a million apps/people/tech and this is the end result. On a platform like HBO where there’s no censoring of jokes.

Crazy underperforming.

I watched the first couple of episodes a few years ago and just couldn't get into it. I might try it again at some point.

It was a great show but very copy and paste

Both statements are true.

The formula might have gotten stale but I couldn’t breathe the first time I watched the middle out scene.

Let Blaine die SWOT was hilarious

You say “a few memes” but these are all memorable and hilarious especially in an age where comedy is pretty meh overall

It killed the show. I don’t know how that happens. I’ve heard people say TJ Miller is a douche but you can’t let him walk in that situation.

The show was funny but it has a Gilligan’s Island vibe where you feel like you ALWAYS end up in the exact same spot and that becomes frustrating.

There are a lot of great jokes and some hilarious scenes, some even iconic (Mean Jerk Time, Erlich slapping the kids, the VC meetings, etc), but the plot was repetitive and formulaic. It had the potential to rank up at the top of HBO's original series, but it just never got there.

Erlich was a terrible character by the end of his time on the show, to be honest. He was great the first 2-3 seasons, but they definitely ran out of stuff to do with him.

I loved the first 3 seasons, even though the entire show was a giant edging experience where shite went wrong right when they were about to finally experience success.

It lost it's "Mike Judge-ness" over time, but it had some excellent characters and hilarious dialogue.

SV is one of those shows that was good, had RIDICULOUS Highs. Like some of the funniest gags or episodes of any TV show ever.

But it also kept doing the same thing each season, was stale at times and couldn't figure out what direction they wanted to go.

It needed to change each year. Make them ultra successful and see what they become, etc

But still, funny, worthwhile show

I think the untimely death of Christopher Evan Welch was a bigger loss than TJ Miller.

Yeah. They basically hamfisted replaced him with a very similar character but female. Wasn't close to as funny.

I enjoyed the show but seemed like every season was the same story but just enough changes were made to keep it "fresh" I think they got kinda stuck writing wise and I'm glad they ended when they did. It's still a fun watch and there are some great episodes but I often think "what if" when really breaking down the show.
