You sure you don't want to take the train?

We just rented a car through Hertz out of the Milan airport. Same process as getting a car at an airport in the US.

Smaller car is better for dealing with narrow roads. And unless you’re very familiar with driving stick, get an automatic. The hills at Lake Como are steep and the roads are curvy.

Taking a car is more fun anyway IMO.

It's just like renting a car in the US. Only difference I've seen is that some credit card that normally provide insurance coverage like Amex Platinum exclude Italy for some reason.

Get the international drivers license at AAA. Park it in cities and walk around. If you don't you'll get weird tickets in the mail months later. When I'm in Europe I pay for the throw the keys at them and wa;l away no matter what happens insurance from the rental company. It's not cheap but you have peace of mind no matter what happens.

Rented one from the Bologna airport before. Did it through Hertz I think, it was one of the big companies if it wasn't Hertz. The cost of the automatic was substantially more than a manual but was worth it.

Honestly driving was very easy and fun because it opens up a lot of small towns with no tours or trains.

Make sure to watch out for the "green zones." I got a ticket for driving in one in Modena, and it was only like ~$100 but had to wire transfer to the police and it was a pain.

I have rented cars in Italy on several occasions, most recently at Sixt at the Florence Airport. Liability insurance came with the car automatically. Between that and the insurance our credit card company gave us for free, we didn't have to buy any additional insurance.

You don't need a car in the cities, but you do in the Tuscan countryside. Visit the medieval hill towns.

Lake Como is beautiful. So is Lake Lugano, the next lake to the west. We stay in Lugano, Switzerland which may be a good day trip for you.

EuropCar is who I typically used if I wasn't traveling for business in Europe. Perfectly fine.

Most posters know what you mean but it is called an International Driving Permit.

I have only rented a car in Italy once and I don't remember, do they check at the car rental. I get 1 every year for Austria but Avis never asks for it at MUC or FRA.

When I showed them my International Driver’s Permit at the rental car counter they told me they didn’t need to see it but that a cop may want to if I ever got pulled over.

Pretty easy, rented a camper in March. Get an international driver license from AAA before you go in case they ask.

I rented from Bolonga with Avis in the Spring. We drove all over Tuscany. We finished in Florence, but turned the car in at the Florence airport and took an Uber to our apartment. I would not recommend having a car in Florence, because the driving access is limited and parking is crazy. Everywhere else was easy. I got an International driving permit from AAA, but nobody every asked for it. I think it cost about $20. I wanted it in case we were stopped by a local police officer. Really easy to drive in the countryside and drivers were very friendly. I get a great rate with Avis, so that is why I used them. I use my credit card insurance for car rental insurance and have never had a problem. Use Waze to find out about speed zones. Italians speed thru most of them, but we always slowed down in those speed zones.

Take the train if possible. If you need to rent a car, be aware that lately the rental car desk people are forcing you to have an "international driver license" which is not a license but probably a scam.

It is not a scam at all. I'm not sure why you posted that. As stated earlier in the thread if you do get pulled over you should have the proper documentation to drive in the country.
