“Somewhat hard to get to” I would slightly dispute.

It’s not Manhattan, Kansas, it is just a place where you either take a regional airport or you have to drive in from Jackson or NOLA.

The single biggest thing hurting them was the media market because Hattiesburg and the gulf coast aren’t big, nor is there any huge media market anywhere in Mississippi that would be a major boost for carriage charges like NY / NJ was for Rutgers getting into the Big Ten.

Southern Miss should have tried their damnedest to get to the AAC 10 years ago when Cinci, Houston, and UCF left.

If Tulane, Memphis, and possibly ECU are somehow thrown a life raft in a resurrected Pac (b/c it's 100% going to need teams in the CST and EST) the Sun Belt will be better than the AAC. The AAC has the better TV right now but it's on increasingly shaky ground after losing UCF, Cincy, Houston, and SMU.

Hard to get to? It’s right off an interstate and called the hub city since it’s close to several larger metro areas.

Southern Miss used to bring in all the players in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana that didn’t get offers from any of the SEC schools. They lived off that for decades.

Once South Alabama and Louisiana Lafayette and La. Tech started tapping into that, they started to fall. Ellis Johnson was also the single worst hire in program history

We had many great battles with Southern Miss. I wish them well and hope they get back to having success

USM helped put Bama into a downward spiral back in 2000. For some reason we played them every season back in those days and I had no clue why. You win swell, you are supposed to do that but lose and oh shite. They recruited all the players that couldn’t get into SEC schools and usually were very competitive year in and year out. Kinda scratched my head is we played them but Ole Miss and State wouldn’t. I think they beat us 21-0 that year in Dubose’s last season at Alabama. It was one of the worst losses I can remember as a Bama fan and kick started a complete train wreck of bad hires, probation, and getting our shite pushed in at Bama most years by LSU, Auburn, and UT until Saban arrived in 2007.

This is what happens to all G5’s for most part…glimpses is success, flashes in the pan. Good Upcoming coaches leave, players transfer

That’s why it’s so funny to see people oooh and aaah at James Madison’s transition success. They pull in over 30 million dollars a year from Student Fees and have an athletic budget over 60 million

Their student fees for athletics are insane. Something like $2,500 in fees is added onto tuition to pay for the athletic department and new facilities.

Stanford

Since 2010, PAC12 record...

8-1 (Orange)
8-1 (Fiesta)
8-1 (Rose)
7-2 (Rose)
5-4
8-1 (Rose)
6-3 (Sun)
7-2 (Alamo)
6-3 (Sun)

(reliable, solid, excellent program)

Then...

3-6
2-7
1-8
1-4 (Blown out by USC, Oregon...lost to Sacramento State)

This is Buddy Tevens/Walt Harris bad.

Why can't they get a Phil Knight sugar-daddy to be interested in sports, just a little bit?

Stanford:

Founders of Google
Yahoo CEO
Founder of PayPal
Founders of Instagram
Founder/CEO of Netflix
Hell, Phil Knight even got an MBA from Stanford.

They could pay more NIL than the Dallas Cowboys roster and it would be chump change.

Ellis Johnson was horrible, but Fedora left the program in shambles with his awful recruiting in the same way Jimbo left FSU.
