Dear FnD board:

We have had a shite load of milk go bad this summer. Mostly from Walmart and Publix. Some of it had been sour as soon as we open it. I was thinking maybe the heat was the problem but I just dumped a half gallon from Publix that should have been good til the 8th.

Guess I’m just gonna spend more for organic from now on. Anyone one else notice this?

I have also noticed this here in Nashville, I drink a lot of milk and know how long it should last. It definitely seems to go bad early more often.

Friend,

We have never had this problem with Organic Valley milk, which also makes exceptional chocolate milk. I do not recall ever having your issue with GreatValue milk either. Are you storing it cold enough? 33-40 degrees storage is best for milk. If you continue with this problem, consider using almond milk, which has a very long fridge life.

Yours,

Buy milk in the carton and not the plastic bottles, and your problem will go away…

Organic Valley will last 3-4 weeks.

Raw milk spoils faster than pasteurized milk. Might be balanced out some by purchasing it from the farm closer to when it was milked.

Plus there is the whole it's illegal in LA thing and the possibility of getting violently ill from it.

I probably don't drink a gallon of milk a year but my wife drinks it daily and uses it in her coffee in the morning, both hot cups and ice coffee in a go-cup.

She has had it go bad several days before the "Use By" date on the carton about a half dozen times this year. We buy it by the half gallon plastic container.

What’s the reasoning? Better insulated?

We don’t go through a ton of milk. I buy the Horizon Organic whole milk because the expiration date is usually 4-6 weeks away. I’ve never had an issue.

I buy the 3 pack milk from Costco and it's good at least a day or two after the expiration date, which is still at least a month away from the purchase date.

As mentioned in another reply, I've also noticed that the non-plastic milk containers tend to keep milk fresher for longer.

Eh. Understand the practices of the farm from which you're obtaining it.

No light intrusion.

Similar to the beer bottle issue (always get dark bottles).

I have found that Costco milk lasts close to a week past the expiration date most of the time

Good to know. Most people who post here do.

Always a good idea. Visit the farm and take a tour and learn all you can, but it's impossible to see bacteria even in the best managed dairies.

Yeah, plastic jugs are the most likely culprits for those who are having this problem.

Friend,

The biggest problem with cheese made in America is that it is made with pasteurized milk. The minute you taste unpasteurized cheese in Europe is the minute you realize there is no great cheese in America.
