Cornell renames English Department as part of 'decolonization efforts.' Check out the new name.
In the fall of 2020, Cornell University’s faculty voted to change the school’s name from the “Department of English” to the “Department of Literatures in English.”
The Board of Trustees officially approved the name change.
Cornell University trustees approved a request from faculty to change the “Department of English” to the “Department of Literatures in English” in the interest of fighting racism.
As Campus Reform reported in November, English Department faculty members voted to change the school’s name during their first faculty meeting of the fall semester. Professor Kate McCullough said that the rebranding would help to avoid the “conflation of English as a language and English as a nationality.”
After faculty overwhelmingly affirmed the measure, they awaited permission from administrators to implement the name change. The Board of Trustees approved the name change in January, and the department’s site currently reflects the new name.
Cornell University spokeswoman Abby Butler directed Campus Reform toward a statement saying that the name change is part of “decolonization efforts” inspired by universities around the world.
According to the statement, Professor Caroline Levine — who supported the measure — said that the “British Empire invented English as an academic discipline as part of a dedicated effort to persuade Indian subjects to view England as a culture superior to their own and so to acquiesce to English rule.”

When do they change the school name to “the cow college of the Ivy League”?

Some cultures are better than others. If progs disagree we could adopt parts of Muslim culture where LGBTQ people are thrown from roofs. I mean, all cultures are equal, right? We can't tout Western values as superior to the cultures of black and brown people...
Edit: Also, as far as sexual assault, India, to my knowledge, leads the world. It's very unsafe to be a woman in India. Muh rape culture! But all cultures are equal, unless it's Western culture, then it's trash.

Cornell Plantation was the university’s nationally known and admired botanical garden. Had to change the name because of the association of the descriptive word “plantation” with American slavery even though no one thought or cared about it for over one hundred years.

The term "shoplifting" has also been changed. Stores moving out of Dem urban areas call it "foot traffic issues."

I am outraged the members of this department were allowed to pick their name! This is a matter that the federal government should intervene on!

The people who say they are anti-colonization are cheering on the millions of new colonists coming across the southern border.

The English occupation of India did more to bring that country into the modern era than any other influence by far.
Prior to the occupation, India had 500 different dialects and folks could not communicate beyond the county/parish line. The Brits implemented an English language for all program that ties India together now and in the future.

As a former HS English teacher, I always questioned why the course was called English. The students are already fluent in the language. They are not learning how to communicate in the language.
They are learning how to read and analyze complex, difficult pieces of literature and text and then demonstrate that they can recognize conventions of writing and communication via critical thinking. I always thought my course should have been called Literature & Communication or Lit & Composition because that is actually what they are learning about.

Holy salamander shite! That is an almost insane level of ignorance from a "professor."
English was an "academic discipline" hundreds of years before England gained control of India.

When does the effort to change the name of Washington State, Washington DC, and 1,000 other city or state names that are from colonizers, slave owners, etc.?
