Why have the last 20 years been less culturally distinct than previous decades?

The 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and to some degree the 90s have all been drastically different from each other. If someone shows you a clothing style from any of these decades you could easily point out the time frame.
A lot of clothing styles that people wore 15 years ago could be worn today and nobody would think it was odd.
The original Wonder Years came out in 1988, but it was based on 1968. Could you imagine a TV show based on 2003?
Have we culturally peaked as a society?

Was just talking about this yesterday with my daughter, with the example of Dazed and Confused. Came out in 1993, was set in 1976, a totally different time and seemingly a world away.
Make the same movie today, and it's set in 2006. It wouldn't be different at all-- hairstyles, cars, music, houses.
Even technology -- cell phones? yep. HD televisions" Yep.
It's weird...

My guess is that in part technology drastically changed decade by decade until we hit the 2000s where it kind of plateaued. Not that we don’t have cooler tech today than we did in 2003 but it’s not drastically different.
To go along with that is also social media. When everything is shared and seen by everyone all the time, you get more copycats.
My final guess is the same problem that Hollywood has which is just re making old things. Instead of new trends, people find retro looks to be trendy.
Beyond these 3 ideas, I haven’t got a clue.

The internet has killed a lot of motivation to be unique. You are exposed to so much more now, an idea like a new fashion trend isn't something that starts organically. Thus, if everyone gets the idea at the same time, it's no longer "cool".

The answer is obvious. The internet. Everybody is now connected and you see all cultures merging together in a way. Before, people on opposite sides of the world, let alone, opposite sides of the country, had very little insight into each other's cultures, and therefore developed their own cultures based on geography.

Each region of the united states used to be more distinct in culture, style, music, food, etc until the age of social media.
Look at popular music, most regional styles are dead. Country, rock, hip hop... it's all blended together in an amalgamation.

Internet. Different regions used to have unique styles and trends and some of those would catch on nationally. Now everyone sees what everyone else is doing all over the world and since most people like to fit in it's led to the homogenization of pop culture.

The 2000’s were just as culturally distinct as the 70’s, 80’s 90’s, but the 10’s and 20’s are minimal. Technology advanced rapidly and changed our lives drastically each decade, but with the 10’s and 20’s, we are pretty much just using the same technology, nothing drastically changed the way we live. Now we are only 3 almost 4 years into the 20’s, AI has the potential to drastically shape this decade. I always say it takes 3-4 to actually see a decade form it’s identity, the first 3-4 years always look and feels like the previous decade.
