IMHO, he is not an every down player yet.

Probably not, and he isnt an edge rusher built like other mega million dollar NFL Edge rushers. Maybe the closest is Miller and Perkins is probably 3 inches shorter and 40 lbs lighter.

I hate to admit it, but we are seeing some glaring issues with this coaching.

- clearly not putting best players in position.
- not playing the best.
- not fixing GLARING issues like punt returns.
- no feel of his team

Based on my expectations of seeing a more evolved system (O and D) with the players/coaches returning..we see regression in several areas.

He's best role in the NFL will be MLB, just like Devin White. Close in size, plays the exact same role and can do it well. To sit Perkins at Edge for the next 2 years would be doing this guy a disservice and everyone in the program knows it.

they are not close in size.

his best NFL comp is Debo Jones.

6’1” 220. Jones played ILB in nickel packages for aranda, but moved to FOLB a when we were in a true 3-4.

It took Jones awhile to hit the field at LSU.

it did.

idk if that was because he didn’t know his position or needed to bull up, but Perkins is a significantly better athlete.

maybe he just isn’t ready to be a full time LB which hey, he’s 16 games into his career he can time.

the issue with the Fsu game was he didn’t do the things he is good at.

what's concerning is that your DC is an NFL linebackers coach and didn't realize this .....

I applaud Kelly for being adaptable and understanding that moving his best player back into a more natural position is mutually beneficial for Perkins and the team. I think the experiment at MLB was well intended.

Frankly, it’s a blessing we played a quality opponent such as FSU week 1 to identify this mistake. We now have time to course correct and gradually improve the defensive scheme as we get into SEC play

How long has Debo been in the NFL?

That’s what I’m thinking. How many good ILBs in the modern era have we had that started and played year to begin their second year?
It’s an extremely tough position to play and to play on every down.

What? Devin White is an inch shorter and 20 lbs heavier. We just saw Perkins try to play the same role as Devin White and it failed miserably.

Better, yes. Significantly, not a chance. Debo ran a 4.44 in high school.

Debo didn't play for Aranda, only Chief and Steele. Aranda came the year after he graduated.

And when free to do 'what he is good at' for a good many plays against GSU he did not influence the game.

I am not sure why everyone blame coaching. We saw Perkins flash last year when he was unblocked and a few time when blocked. He will not fly under the radar this year, he will be accounted for.

I get what the coaches were trying to do with him at Inside LB. If against FSU he was getting after the QB and not spying there would not have been such a big uproar.

Moving him around is a big plus, but at the end of the day he needs to come eat off the edge.

any reasonable person would. I would love to see him impacting the game like a Devin White.

Forty times from HS only says so much.
Jones didn’t play so long in the NFL because he was slow. He was fast at his position, and had great instincts and reactions.

Didn’t Perkins mostly play offense? He’s going to need some time to grow into a position.

Look at Devin White. A freak, an all time great. Blessed with size and athleticism. He didn’t start til year two after playing some as a freshman.

You can’t expect Perkins to duplicate what White did.
