ANALYSIS: Students are entering college unable to write
Several universities offer writing courses meant to prepare college students for college-level writing.
Businesses are also shelling out billions to offer employees remedial writing classes.
K-12 public education has failed to prepare incoming college students how to write at the public level.
In a desperate attempt to catch high school graduates up to speed, many universities are providing remedial writing classes to college students.
About 68% of those starting at two-year public institutions and 40% of students enrolled in public four-year universities took at least one remedial writing class between 2003 to 2009, according to an original report from the Department of Education.
Average math and reading test scores dropped significantly from 2019 to 2021, according to a 2022 study by two Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). It seems likely that the 2016 figures would be much worse if they were resampled in 2023, after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Megan Kuhfeld, one of three NWEA study researchers, told Campus Reform Aug. 30 that “It seems likely but with two caveats: (a) the students in our study have not reached college yet so it is hard to extrapolate from middle school test results and (b) colleges may have changed their criteria for routing students into remedial courses as a results of the pandemic, which would also change the proportion.”

But they can name all of the 153 genders though.

This is triggering to those of us who can't read.
This is what happens when our schools get poisoned.

Have you seen the poor excuses for writing contained in a lot of posts on this board?

Thank the Reagan-Carter devised Department of Education...
Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt - the deliberate dumbing down of America documents this massive mistake - she was there as an undersecretary level position under Reagan resisting this disaster/intentional damage of the USA
The sooner this becomes recognized the sooner this damage can be repaired

One problem is the method of teaching basic reading in 1st grade.
Before 1970 it was always phonetics. Then it turned to 'whole word.' Phonetics produced kids who could read much faster and comprehend better.
Most private schools realized this in the 80s and stuck with phonetics. Most public schools still use whole word.

Ask them about Global Warming and they will be able to tell you the same lies that the left have been doing for decades now.

Public education is just globalist satanic brainwashing. If you can’t afford private education, don’t have a kid. Pretty simple.

How can they learn to write English if they only speak Spanish and Ebonics?

I am sorry but this is nothing new. writing classes have been offered for decades as a pre req.
also please go look at any text/fb post from anyone over 60...They are incredibly hard to read. Lets not glorify past generations and act like the whole generation could write at a high level.

Reading, writing and arithmetic are not a requirement to be a college indoctrinated mouthpiece for Fundamental Transformation……just pay for my college loans and I will push the cultural Marxist propaganda.

I’m 64, what I’ve found over the years is I’ve gotten lazy. I frequently fail to use proper English. My handwriting is a shell of what is was when I was in high school and later college….lol

when standards get lowered to equalize outcomes, rather than opportunities, you get a society that rapidly declines in every meaningful way.

I worked with a new guy a couple of years ago, when I wrote out something in cursive (script) he could not read it.

Tell me about it! Schools don't emphasize writing skills, grammar, or correct spelling. I routinely see high school students who cannot write a complete sentence with correct punctuation.

They can't write like with a pen or pencil? That's not surprising since everything is typed out these days. I don't have much reason to write other than occasionally signing my name.

Or do basic Algebra. Can't remember the college, but there was a report that said they are needing to create math courses to help their new students.
We really need colleges that drop the DEI crap and go after the best, and let us know that is what they are doing. They will be a part of the future of the new "Ivy League" since the current ones are being stupid.
ETA - Here's an article about it from the Seattle Times
Blame is the pandemic. Which I can see has fault, but of course doing what it takes to repair the issue is not "PC" enough I'm sure.

I would put CB58's writing skills up against any on this board.

Give it another 5 years and those Quantum Computers will figure out the mechanism of Bio-AI interface and an ‘education’ will take no longer than the time required to download. These moral/practical conundrums will be moot issues as we move on to the bigger stuff. Like what/who we become in the coming “fundamental transformation “. Strap in. Get Jesus if an “open proposition “/option.
