I am traveling to Rome for a Mediterranean cruise in mid October. We are arriving in Rome two days early to explore. Going to see the coliseum and the Vatican and other top spots.

Where are any recommendations to eat? My wife has a significant dairy allergy and Italian dishes without cheese/butter don’t seem possible, but we would like some recommendations so we can explore the different menu options to ensure she has something to eat

Waiting on a flight to Rome now. The best places tend to be the small hole in the wall spots you stumble across.

Here are two of my favorites:

Hosteria Costanza
Near Campo de Fiore
Good food in unique qnd historic surroundings. The restaurant is built among the ruins of the ancient Theatre of Pompey (Teatro de Pompeo) which is where the Roman Senate was meeting when Julius Caesar was assassanated there. You can still see some of the old caves.

Enoteca Cul de Sac
Small wine bar with good food and an encyclopedic wine list. Just off Piazza Navona.

These are not fancy, fine dining places, but are two of our favorite hangouts.

Antica Enoteca. Awesome history, atmosphere and food. Ask them to show you the Roman catacombs behind their supply room.

Will do - we were supposed to just have a layover in Rome and come back here later next week, but our flight got delayed so it looks like we will be in Rome until the morning.

I haven't been there, but I have a trip coming up in a few weeks and one of my co-workers recommended Tonnarello (trastevere)

Osteria da Fortunata near Campo de Fiori.

Best Carbonara and Tiramisu in Rome. Watch the old Italian ladies making pasta by hand in the window.

Miscellanea behind the Pantheon was one my favorites. Not fancy, but really good pasta and reasonably priced.

That would be French dishes. Italian dishes cook a lot with olive oil. Just explain the allergy.

I love hole in the wall places just as much as most people, but for a fine dining experience that can’t be replicated I recommend Aroma. Unbeatable view and probably the best food and wine experience of my life.

Virgilio a Campo de' Fiori, great cafe during the day and drinks on the piazza ever night
The square is one of the best evening spots to be
Close to everything.

Just visited Rome and had a wonderful meal at Poldo e Gianna Osteria near Giolitti and the Pantheon. I don't think you can go wrong with anything they serve.

You will definitely want to get a reservation, but it's tucked away enough to where you might be able to get one only a day or two in advance.

Armando al Pantheon is excellent. It is in a very touristy area, but don’t be fooled, it is the real deal for Roman classics.

Piperno is kind of a ritzier version of Armando. Traditional Roman menu.

Went earlier this summer on a three country tour. These recommendations are from our tourguide, who was born in Britian.

Il Vero Alfredo - said to be the best Alfredo Sauce in Rome. Owner's wife took sick and could not eat regular Alfredo Sauce, so he reformulated and got swamped with customers and copycats. Reservations easy to get and recommended. Piazza Augusto Imperatore, 30, 00186 Roma, RM

Della Palma said to have the best Gelato in Rome. Via della Maddalena, 19-23, 00186 Roma RM

The above I went to and can verify. Below are recommendations we did not try:

STRADAROMANA Pizza and Grill

La Barchetta Del Pescatore (Seafood)

Layaline - Ristorante Libanese (Arabic)

Enjoy the eternal trainwreck that is Rome. We loved it,
