I’m with you. There is an over-utilization of technology where it’s unnecessary. Why in the world does my refrigerator need to connect to the internet?

Maybe you buy shite products?

My Nest thermostat on my AC will not cool the fricking house. It’s always 79 degrees. I have rebooted it, changed all of the settings a hundred times, nothing. The actual AC unit is in perfect shape.

That’s your electric company. Pull the nest off of the network.

Nobody made you buy a Nest, or a smart washer or a smart refrigerator or a car with smart wipers.

Because they know a shite ton of people will shell out thousands just to have the "coolest" thing.

Meanwhile, I can go to Lowes and buy a basic fridge/freezer for $400 that is easy to fix and will last for a long time.

That's one of the problems you can't because they expect you to monitor email answer any stupid questions that could wait for a few days. It's really making me hate what I do and I just hope I can drag along for the remaining years I have to go.

I guess LG and Maytag are shite products then. I wouldn’t had thought that at the time but sure, I guess you can call them shite in addition to Nintendo switch. Should have went the much more expensive route and got the Xbox / PS19 gold platinum combo package instead. Would have cost $1,000 more but would have been worth it

As people become more computer literate, I think expectations about how well software operates have declined. Now that people have some idea of how to deal with crashes, slowness, etc., software creators are leaning on them more to do so.

The user experience typical of software and web sites today would have made the end users of 25 years ago just shut the damn computer down and go read a book or water their plants or something.

Concrete example: the first time I tried to use an e-commerce site was around 1999. I remember selecting my state from a drop-down, and then noticing that the computer was (quite conspicuously) hitting the network again to get a list of cities. My thought was, "this is really garbage and I don't think this kind of 'application' will ever really supplant the desktop .EXE as something people use a lot." Of course that attitude is laughably different from how people think now.

Technology is great until it’s not. I’ve worked in IT/tech for 25 years and if paid the same I’d rather go work mowing yards or start a dog rescue

Ditto, I buy the simplest product that can do the job, a wifi refrigerator is the dumbest shite I ever heard of. My wife wanted a wifi washer and dryer so she can tell when a load is done without getting up. She goes to an $80 a month gym 4 days a week to get exercise, here is some free exercise. Got a Speed Queen washer and I fixed the dryer.

LG has compressor issues. Class action suit a few years back. Unnaware beforehand, I bought an LG Instaview fridge.

After about 14 months, interior temps started warming up. Ice makers stopped dumping. Interior fans, temp sensors, and onboard diagnostics would come back good.

Despite what your warranty documentation might say, LG now warrants for 5 years parts and labor on their compressors, as a result of that suit.

They were going to send out someone to repair, but no one in my area worked with R600a gas. So they refunded my purchase price (minus $200 because it was a pro rated refund).

$200 for a new compressor off of ebay. And $150 for a fridge guy to swap it and change over to R134.

All said and done, after refund I'm in it for $550 (and associated bs) for a $4k fridge. However, I wouldn't buy another LG going forwards.

I wrote a paper in college during the mid-80's about how technology was going to destroy the world. All because I hated CD's.
