CB is likely to hold this team back from achieving what the rest of the team is capable of. There is no positive spin on being forced to move Sage to CB.

Absolutely no way he’s 5’11. Either way, he plays like he’s 5’4”.

He's not 5'11. I don't know why people in this thread quote LSU's listed heights. They're not official and he's definitely not 5'11 lol. 5'9 is probably more accurate. He's closer to 5'9 than he is 5'11 that's a fact.

The fact they moved him to CB is a huge red flag. Either he had the single best offseason progression for a DB at LSU in quite awhile or we're in deep shite. I do not see how LSU thinks putting him on the boundary can better utilize his ability when he struggled as it was at in nickel and S moments. He doesn't have the physicality to be playing boundary his size is too much of a limiting factor. Probably speaks more at how little confidence they have in Welch/Harris.

It appears so. I don't know how House schemes to protect a former FCS player at field corner and a small converted safety (who struggled in coverage as a safety) as your boundary corner. Oh yeah, and without your best interior lineman to apply pressure (thanks NCAA!).

I'll let you know when the clock reads 0:00 after the FSU game. Only place where we might get exploited via breakdowns in assignments or communications.
ALL other position groups have the ability (skills/exp) to be dominant in this game, and the season for that matter.

I'm definitely concerned about CB going against a heisman contender QB who shredded us last year and 2 very good WRs on FSU's roster.

Me too, but that’s because they are great, not because our corners are bad.

If we had secondaries like we used to have, with guys like PP7, TM14, Mo Claiborne, etc. I wouldn’t be worried. But those were all-time great corners, and that’s not something we will have as often anymore. Kelly’s style is not a CB-centered defense like Les Miles used to have. Back then the best corners in the country flocked to LSU to be featured in that defense. That’s why we out recruited every other team in the nation for corners. You won’t see that again.

At one time USC got the best RBs. It was because they perfected the Student-Body-Left/Right and featured RBs. Their RBs won Heisman after Heisman. The best RBs wanted to be there. Not any more.

Ryan was moved to CB to make room for Andre Sam at safety.

Ryan to CB, Greg Brooks to nickle, Sam to S

I know they prefer Brooks at nickel (not nickle, btw) and I think Sam ended up being more ready to start than they thought coming in.

you don't know that

I do know that Outside vs Nickel are different techniques. Ryan hasn't played CB at this level on a consistent basis. He's got to learn it. Thats not "inside info" its just common sense. IF you haven't done something consistently, you have to rep it to GET it.

Defensive back play is very dependent on communication, chemistry, confidence, swagger.
If you’re thinking too much you’ll be a step slow. If your assignment or communication isn’t clear you’ll be lost.
These are things we won’t know until we see this group on the field.
I’m concerned because we have new faces together but I feel good because we have a team captain DB and lots of individual game experience for the starters.

But you said he doesn’t know the position and unless you saw every spring and fall practice plus summer workouts, there really isn’t any way to know that.

However you want to look at it, the fact that a guy who is clearly best as nickel/safety gets moved to CB a month before the season starts and ends up being your starter, that is concerning. I don’t see how you can spin it any other way.

I’m fairly worried, as it had always been my observation that when Sage Ryan was matched up on WR, it looked like opposing Coordinators attacked it. Never thought coverage was his strength, yet he’s moving to a spot that would indicate he’s our second best pure cover guy.

LSU hasn’t released an official depth chart, so no. But if you are going off of the most recent information that was available to the public, then you can assume he is.

Not the way I view it.

I think Ryan was shifted to CB to get Andre Sam on the field, not because Chestnut or anyone else can’t play at CB.

Just my opinion

I heard Bruce Feldman randomly mention Sam on a podcast yesterday. Apprently he’s really blown up, which is good.

I personally think they’re going to scorch our secondary. I think they’ll get better as the season goes along similar to last year. I think it’ll be a shootout. Too much firepower on offense for both teams. Imo

Bingo, the Coaches know more. The constant negativity comes from the same people who say JD5 isn’t a good QB, he’s not serviceable, he’s good. Wingo is a freaking All American DT, not one person on here thought he’d be half as good as he is. Every negatiger thought Alright we got ol sure hands Bech back here to return k/p and he drops everything. Nabers the best WR in the SEC, strong hands, twitchy speed and he muffs the first 2 punts of the game. The problem is we’re playing a Top team right out of the gate and we along with CBK don’t know what to expect until LSU hits the field. Maason being out hurts substantially more this game because the opponent is that damn good. The DBs would benefit immensely with an elite pass rush(duh) but with Smith out it’s amplified. Football is Football, talent is about as equal as it gets between these two teams, I think we got a better OL, but they got AAs along their front. We have imo better safetys but they got Great WRs and we are going to get hurt at CB no matter who’s in there. This is as tough as an opponent to open the season in a long while as far as talent FSU’s possess. But we’re going to show up and hopefully show out, we’ve got to execute better at positions we’re strong at to make up for the weakness at CB. They’ll get better but there’s no preseason or practices that’s going to simulate the game and FSUs offense, they’re the real deal.
We are Going TO WIN - there’s nothing we can do about it but gnaw our finger nails off(if that’s your thing) or curl up in the corner in the fetal position, but it’s going down Sunday Night and it can’t get here fast enough. And there’s not one thing that we can suggest, whine about, boast about or anything else to determine the outcome.
In short, well long way about it, 1) Go thru your pregame or game day ritual 2) cheer your fkn a$$ off!
The one thing I do know is We got better Coaches n CBK & Coach House! Tigers win!
