My GP has been trying to get me on statins.

I haven't in the past. Thoughts?

NB4 some dude says high cholesterol is nothing to worry about. Trust your Dr and do what they say.

The correct answer is meh. It probably makes a difference in outcome in like 1% of the people that take them. I wouldn’t put up with side effects on that type of ROI.

Well I know I don't know as much as most OTers and just an ER Doc but my MD tried to get me on statins but I think they can cause a lot of problems with your liver and I already work it with alcohol. I started taking Red Yeast Rice and they got it down to normal levels.

I started Lipitor on 7/22 and it keeps my total cholesterol near 150. Before that it was right at 200. Lipitor can raise an enzyme level in the liver and the doc monitors for that, that’s all I got.

Get on them. Statins are good for people even without high cholesterol.

Now if you wanted to debate high blood pressure medicines, then there are legitimate arguments for and against.

Cholesterol is not nearly as big of an issue as we've been told. Just saying...

I would do everything you can to optimize diet first

But if you have familial cholesterol issues will probably need it.

How bad is your cholesterol? Does your GP think it can be managed through diet and exercise?

My doctor tried to get me on them for 6 years. I recently started the Mediterranean Diet and within 2 weeks my numbers were within the healthy ranges.

yes along with

6 oz of 100% not from concentrate pomegranate juice
6000iu of nattokinase
vit k2

i dont really see the downside of statins if you are not 1 to get muscle pains or other sides from them

if you are overweight though, first thing you should do before jumping on them is try losing BODY FAT, start exercising(lifting weights progressively 3-4 days per week and walking the other days) and start eating right.

also if you smoke, stop. if you drink more than 1-2 times a week and drink more than 4-6 every time....cut back.

If you are going just jump on the medicine without making lifestyle changes than only going to help a little. If you plan to follow typical South LA diet and life typical South LA lifestyle when if comes to exercise and alcohol etc...then you are just wasting your time.

Yes.

I wouldn’t mind being on a low dose as a preventative and my cholesterol is in check

Statins nearly wrecked me ! Muscle enzymes went out of wack , took 7 years to do it though. I tried Zetia after, can’t take it either. If you do go on a statin watch your muscle enzymes closely . Simvistatiin is the worst, avoid if at all possible.

Why even go see a PCP if you don't trust them?

Nope, not worth the side effects. And for what? A measly 1% increase in avoiding a heart attack. Nope not for me. Get you diet in check. Reduce or eliminate sugars and most carbohydrates. Educate yourself. I'm on the carnivore diet and I feel amazing, less inflammation, better cognitive function and my blood lipid profiles other than elevated cholesterol(which have been wrongfully demonized over the years). And I'm 45.

Here's video by an actual family practioner:
