Good smoker for beginners?

Not looking to spend $600 on a smoker. Just something to play around with until maybe wanting something bigger and better down the road.
What about the vertical smokers? There’s a Cuisnart electric vertical for $200. Good reviews. Anyone smoke with one of these?

I would go with the 18.5" Weber Smokey Mountain.
Easy to use. Cooks very well. And they have been around so long you could watch videos for days for pointers and helpful info.

Weber Smokey Mt, was the first smoker I got, I still use it for chicken. If you plan on doing whole Briskets or multiple racks of ribs get the 22.5 inch.

I have the Masterbuilt Vertical Smoker.
I had the electric one and it was ok. When it died I got the same one but with propane tank. Really like it. Super easy.

Home Depot often puts the Nexgrill Pellet smoker on sale. The middle one is $569 and I got it for $400 a couple of weeks ago.

I started with something like this many moons ago and it’s around 104.00 at HD. I made many a good food in this.

Do you have a dedicated charcoal grill already?
If not, then I suggest the Weber Kettle 22". I used that as a " smoker" for years by offsetting the charcoal and wood or by using the snake method. Very versatile and best bang for your buck as a beginner. Gives you the opportunity to learn some basic fire management skills for the future as well. Something you don't get the opportunity to learn on an electric or pellet.

Also have a Masterbuilt electric. Super easy and convenient. Not the same result as a real wood burning smoker but still damn delicious. Electrics aren’t good at creating a smoke ring but the taste is there.

Definitely Weber kettle if you don't already have a charcoal grill

I have the WSM 22. I had a WSM 18 for 10 years prior to that. It's a very good basic smoker that turns out great products. That said, it smokes. That's it.
What the others are saying about the Weber 22 inch kettle is spot on. With a little imagination you can do just about anything. I'm on my second kettle in twenty years.

If you are looking for a decent entry level offset stick burner to learn to smoke with, here is an example that is a decent starter unit. All the big box stores carry their versions under different names. They won't last more than 5 years unless you keep them covered, and the fire box cleaned out, when not in use.

quote:yea and it devolved into a semantics argument.. But i will say after 2 smokes in my 100 dollar Cuisinart it looks brand new...so looks like im winning on the $420 WSM vs 100 Cuisinart argument.

I remember that thread. You got your arse handed to you pretty good. But hang in there, you'll show 'em all in the end.

Hey you're good man. I wasn't in the discussion. I hope your cooker lasts you forever.
