If you're complaining that teachers have summers off, you are totally clueless to what teachers do. I challenge anyone who criticizes teachers to come do our job for one year and I promise you will change your mind.
It's people like you that make teaching so difficult. Instead of taking responsibility for your child, you want to blame the teacher for everything.
Please come do our job for just one year because I have some students that would chew you up and spit you out and there's not a damn thing you could do about it. Quit criticizing and come walk in our shoes!

Vapes are illegal under 21 so they should be disposed of. Cell phones are *expensive so I guess you have to return those.
*expensive to tax payers paying for the free cell phones.

Where are you teaching? Our subs get like $80 a day.

This is year 17 for me. I’m as excited as I’ve ever been to have students tomorrow. My goal this year is to actually slow down. Spend more time talking about life, effort, treating others and themselves with proper respect.
If I can mix this in I’m hoping to connect better, and get more effort when it’s needed. The last few years I’ve felt rushed to make up the gap left from Covid on our students.

In my wife’s district they adopted a “Core Belief” that every child can be motivated through good teaching to meet the standards.
It is worded in a way to make it the teacher’s fault if a student is unmotivated and won’t do anything.
The result of this sets the bottom grade in the class to C- or 74 in her school. So if a kid does nothing and sleeps all day he gets a C in the class. To give him anything lower opens an investigation into the teachers who are unwilling or unable to motivate the student.

Covid caused lots of teachers to quit/ retire and is one of the reasons for the teacher shortage.
Good luck teachers. Hope you have a great and safe year.

Good luck and I hope you have a great year and that your new approach will be successful.
As for Covid, I think educators use that as an excuse for why scores are low, but I don't agree with that. Scores are low because we have been passing kids through the system for years and it's not going to change anytime soon. I have students that do absolutely nothing and fail my class and they bump them up anyway. It used to bother me, but I've come to realize that I did my part and if the administrators want to pass that student, that's on them.

$250 a day
My brother is a teacher/coach. He is literally at work every day in the summer, working inside and outside in the 102-degree heat. Many teachers at his high school teach summer school, so all that bullshite about teachers got it made is horseshite. Sure, they get certain select days off, but their whole salary is for working the slotted days 182 to 200 something days, and their pay is spead over 12 months. In louisiana, some school districts are so woke that the DISCIPLINE of a lot of kids is terrible. In the last few years, like 3/4 years, he says the kids have caught on that their is no real protocal from the school system that makes the kids fear the results they would get from their terrible behavior so they push their deviant actions through the roof cause they can. Unless students these days fear you, they will tell you to "frick off", steal anything you got that is of value in your class, break stuff, fight you( cause they know u cant do anything) threaten to go to your house, throw trash in your yard and their "PARENTS" do not give a flying frick. In fact, the parents, when the kid is 100 percent wrong, will defend their child. frick those fricking demons. Id get fired in day one cause id be choking the frick out of one.
I wouldnt wish that shite on nobody!
My sister's husband(BIL) drives a truck for a large carrier(5 yrs in,28 yrs old)doing a no touch job and makes 110k and he is home a couple of nights a week and on weekends. No stress. I tell my brother(has his cdl)to leave coaching and go drive a truck. frick those crazy kids and the woke school system they go too.

thus we have simply held our standard and not seen huge growth in the field. —-so why does the US import engineers and doctors? Why do we rank so low globally in math?
Because we employ more of those than any nation on earth and we are looking for the best and brightest.
The US is a world leader in engineering innovations, it is the world leader in tech innovation. And medical research—we are the front runner by a mile.
The Chinaman’s math scores scare people. They beat those kids to memorize and when it comes time for real world application, they have to steal our inventions because they’re too dumb to come up with their own.

My introversion. I like my students and enjoy my job, but it wears me out. Social interactions - especially with needy, high energy teenagers - exhaust me like no other. Even good, easy days leave me a puddle of mud by 3:30pm.
It’s amazing how long it took me to figure this out or admit it.
I now work with two other people and I have so much more energy for the rest of the day. It has dramatically improved every facet of my life and life with a young family.
Also, you left out your longer (very astute) answer about how America doesn’t know what it wants education to be.

And that’s all they’re paid for, too. Take a few months leave time away from work and divide what you make by 12. People who bitch about teachers are just as annoying as the teachers who bitch.
Do you know that I was saying that most people really don’t work a hell of a lot more than teachers work?
How is that bitching about teachers?
I taught for nine years. I’ll never bitch about teachers.
As I was saying, an 8 hour day for a teacher is probably equivalent to 16 hours for most of corporate America.
Teachers are forced to be on their game at all times due to the nature of the work. Most others, not so much.

I salute you and your fellow teachers who are trying very hard to do the right thing.
The only comfort I can offer that comes to mind is this notion of "Redemptive Suffering" that we see in Christianity and maybe some other religions. When you suffer for the good of humanity in a selfless and self-sacrificing effort for the greater good of humanity, you gain a metaphysical and super-natural and spiritual benefit that will one day surpass your suffering.
It's still gonna suck today, though.

I think you should leave the ones that aren’t there to learn alone and teach the ones that do want to learn.

why are all teachers miserable
This is my 15th year teaching and I absolutely love it. Sure, you have some challenging students every year, but most students are good kids. The one year I hated teaching was the year I worked at a school where the principal and one of the assistant principals were complete assholes. I'm fortunate to work at a great school now with the best administration I've experienced. I teach high school - chemistry and physics.
