Saturday before last, we flew from San Francisco to Auckland, New Zealand on a red-eye overnight flight. We had bought our tickets well in advance, and selected seats in the next-to-last row as indicated on the seat selection screen. We did this because the last two rows are only two seats across, and as it was just my daughter and I, we thought this would be great-- a little more room, and no having to get or wake the aisle person up if you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

We picked the next-to-last row (seats k and l), so we could recline our seats. Row 51 in this seating diagram:

In San Francisco, we boarded the plane, and I immediately made a beeline to the next-to-last row. I was about to sit down when my daughter touched me on the shoulder and said, "Dad, that's not our seats. Row 51 is up here a few rows". Damned if it wasn't true. The plane we were on had 5 more rows:

I was more than a little miffed; we had picked those seats for a reason, and as recently as a week before when I changed our domestic connections I made sure we had the same two-seat row-- and even SAW them on the seating diagram-- for that long international flight.

Looked it up after we landed, and apparently the difference is that our tickets were sold on the basis of United's Boing 777-200, but the plane they used was the 777-300ER. Two different variations of the same plane.

This ever happen to anyone else?

I can only assume the plane filled up and was fully booked, and in the last week or so they switched to the second variant so they could sell more seats. I remember an announcement before boarding saying they could seat all their standbys... kind of not fair to those who picked seats well in advance, however.

Happens a fair amount on long haul flights. The airline has the right to swap equipment for any flight it desires and you can’t do anything about it.

IOW, tough shite, deal with it.

Yes, have had a similar situation but in reverse on American. Had a flight booked to Europe and had our seats selected well in advance, all of a sudden a couple of weeks out I get a notification that our flight time was changed by a couple of minutes, then I noticed our seats has been slightly changed as well as the aircraft had moved from a Boeing 777 to a 787, I guess they didnt sell enough tickets/have enough demand and downsized to a smaller plane. We were still seated next to each other so there wasnt much to change on my part. All that to say, yes it does happen. Dont know that there's much you can do about it unless you catch it right as it happens.

Sometimes they will switch planes for mechanical reasons.

Trust me, a direct flight from the west coast to New Zealand is the last place you want to have something go wrong on the plane. You are over the Pacific Ocean the entire time and a long, long way from any airport 95% of the time.

Yep.

I played varsity soccer in HS, coached my two girls in playground ball. Oldest daughter has left the nest (now an ICU nurse) and asked if I would go with her to see a game each in New Zealand and Australia (wife and other daughter wouldn't take the long flight). Not a fan of the US women's team (mainly because of Rapinoe) but the younger ones seem okay, so I cheered them on in Wellington last week.

And Rapinoe didn't play...

This is why I check almost every day after I book and select seats just to see if any better seats opened up or if they changed aircraft.

Happens all the time, the reason to constantly check the app and seating chart to see if something has changed.

Happens all the time. Also, seat selections aren't guaranteed and the airline can, and will move you if they want/need to.

Yes in reverse. Years ago I had an employer that would pay for first. I'm scheduled on a 757-300 MSP-SEA and they downgrade to a 757-200. The choices were window seat coach or wait for the next plane later that day. They will rebook you only for interline connections. I had a non-interline connection in SEA so I had to take a credit or refund or something and ride coach. By the time the desk was done figuring this all out, I was literally the last person aboard, no luggage space, so my bag had to fly on the floor in front of me on a longer ride. Was not thrilled but no alternatives. It's also why I carry a soft bag most days. You get emergency connections and reroutes and it fits just about anywhere.

The second plane has more business class seats, and overall less actual seats/rows.

A few months ago Copa swapped planes on me and my lay flat seat became a standard business class seat. That sucked on a long over night flight.

Never book a bulkhead seat, especially in the middle. That's usually where the baby bassinets are, and the family will usually wait to ask for a seat with a bassinet when they get to the gate. You will get moved.

Good info. I booked United Premium Plus IAH-EWR for September right after looking at thus thread and picked row 21 instead of 20 to stay off the bulkhead. Especially in the middle.
