Cock fighting is huge in South America. My friend grew up there as a child of missionaries and moved to the states in high school. Said he would go to cock fights and couldn’t believe the cops would bust it up. Different cultures value different things. Some people think dogs are worth more than chickens. Not much different to me.

People that were done with their dogs would give them to him so he could use them to train his dogs and get them blood thirsty.

So if you grew up and your dad raped girls in front of you, raping a girl would be okay?
If anything, someone that is claiming to be that ignorant to a violent or malicious act should be imprisoned sooner and longer as they are more of a danger to society.
Ignorance to that sort of thing is absolutely not acceptable in this sort of a situation. I would expect that if most people actually experienced what Vick did and what he allowed they would be disgusted.

I think it’s relating more to the fact that if you see something regularly defined as “ok” in your society, you are likely to repeat it.
Instead of raping girls, how about men that beat women. That’s a pattern of behavior that can trickle down.

I thought the way his life and his career were impacted was very disproportionate to what he did. There was a racial aspect to it, but the larger problem is this nation's fixation om dogs.
Vick really just checked off too many boxes on the suburban rage boner checklist. That was the offense for which he was punished.

Dog fighting really is "just something you grow up around" for some people. In rural areas it used to be more common and I remember the issue people had with it was that people did it to gamble.. 
While I never watched a dog fight in person, I know people who have. Someone on the board might be able to confirm, but I think they still have cock fighting around the Lafayette area.
The only reason he spend the time in jail was because the NFL had to cater to all the animal rights people. It was fricking pit bulls. Thats what they are bred for.

Also, I don’t think what Vick did should be a crime. We torture systematically some animals just so we can make their meat a little more tender for our pleasure. Some cultures would find this worthy of a crime.
Why is that morally more acceptable than fighting with animals for our pleasure? It’s choosing virtues based on one’s personal feelings.
