OU was considered a MONSTER that year. The media gave us NO chance to beat them. And LSU absolutely creamed them. Sure, the final score was 21-14, but to hold that team to less than 170 yards was a miracle to the talking heads at the time. USC would have been annihilated. They had ONE top 25 win that year. A weak as baby shite schedule. They never saw anyone close to LSU's level that year.

If OU didn't absolutely shite the bed before we played them there would not even be a discussion. USC winning it in 04 and playing for it again in 05 seemed to cement the AP's decision in their own minds. All I know is that Nick Saban raised a crystal football in the air while Carroll was playing with his sword.

Well, since it was the last time USC was relevant… i guess i dont actually care.

LSU had the greatest season of cfb history in 2019. Makes the rest of this stuff just noise.

The better question is why after almost 20 years and 2 other championships are LSU fans so insecure about this? There have been many split titles in CFB history including 1997 and 1991. I’ve never heard Nebraska fans ask why someone says Michigan won the NC in 1997.

And before the inevitable but the BCS was meant to avoid splits. The BCS was not the NCAA and did not even attempt apparently to get the AP to agree to name the BCS winner the NC. The formula in 2003 was unnecessarily complicated and was obvious to anyone paying attention that a split was possible. If the formula that was used from 2004 forward was in place in 2003 the matchup would have been LSU vs USC, as it should have been. The only reason any of you will defend Oklahoma being in the game is because they were. Many mistakenly think the debate is whether LSU or USC should have been in the game when the debate was actually USC or Oklahoma. Everyone, the human polls, yea including the “media” and computers had LSU #2 going in so we are in regardless .

Same reason they deride the “flyover states.” Bunch of coastal elite pricks that think they matter more than us

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think Louisiana is considered a fly over state. And it's definitely coastal lol

Just because it didn’t go the media darlings way doesn’t mean the AP gets to decide who gets the title. That AP “title” is literally meaningless under the system everyone agreed to
Eh, the system everyone agreed to is how the Coaches poll champion was determined, it just so happened that was the first year in the BCS era that the AP voted differently.

Now it was BS the way a lot of media tried to completely downplay LSU’s claim.

Fact of the matter is the system that everyone agreed to and played under to decide the national champion was the BCS. Just because it didn’t go the media darlings way doesn’t mean the AP gets to decide who gets the title

Fact of the matter is this is 100% nonsense. The NCAA did not create the BCS and did not agree that would be the only champion. The AP was not part of the BCS (the BCS used the AP poll without permission) and the AP has named a national champion since 1936 that is recognized by the NCAA.

I mean technically they could vote whoever they want in basketball and baseball too. It is dumb that anyone even cares what they think after we have an actual national championship game. It is no different than me awarding somebody my championship after they don't win the playoffs, entirely meaningless.

So true. It is what it is, I much prefer the game trophy but, I’m the end, who gives AF?

The same reason the media was so insistent on there being a rematch in 2011.

The trophy was really just the Coaches’ Poll trophy. USC got one from the AP as well.

I’m referring to the fact that we got the one that was awarded for playing the Championship Game.

As other have alluded to, LSU *won* the national championship, while USC was *named* national champion. Big difference. The "playoffs" in Div 1 college football started with the BCS. There just happened to be 2 teams in the playoff. USC didn't qualify for the playoff, as determined by the rules at the time. So, they have no claim to the championship.

Further, since their 2004 championship was stripped due to violations, they haven't been national champs since the 70s. They went from thinking they were playing for a three-peat to actually being a no-peat.

Exactly, I think before BCS the AP title was more “prestigious” but from 1998-2013 it was the BCS and the crystal football. No one has ever said USC is the only champion. Plenty of splits throughout history, 2003 will go down as the last.

Which was the Coaches poll trophy that had been given out every year since 1986. They just began awarding it on the field in the BCS era because of the agreement to vote the winner #1.

The issue I have always had is that before the season AP agreed to be a part of the BCS and award their trophy accordingly. But when it became apparent that things weren’t going to go their way with their darling USC they changed their tune.
