Pelicans won’t allow Jose to participate in FIBA

Tough break for Pels guard Jose Alvarado who won’t get to participate in the World Cup for Puerto Rico.
Team wanted him to sit for precautionary reasons as he continues to recover from a stress reaction in his tibia that cost him the final part of the season.
Sucks for Jose, but it’s probably for the best

I dont understand how three months ago near the play in game he was understood at the time to be 2 weeks away, but now cant play still?
Maybe the intel was wrong.

I never got the impression that Jose was close. He was in a walking boot for quite a while from what I remember.

Shows some of you how important they think he is.

And because it’s a stress reaction. If it’s not completely healed and he plays on it, he could get a stress fracture in his leg. Ala Jrue Holiday, which cost him most of two seasons with us. He needs to sit for his own good as well as ours. Does suck though.

Was just about to say this. Teams getting Jrue flashbacks

This explains Jose’s IG “broken heart” story from a couple hours ago

You could argue that this wasn't a reasonable decision, but then everyone would know you're a retard.

The MRI says he isn’t fully healed. That should be more concerning. He won’t be in his best shape in camp, and Daniels will pass him for good if he avoids his own injuries.

That's not true. If he planned to play in the fiba, he would have been healthy. He was cleared for basketball activities at the time of the play in. He was playing basketball all summer and was playing ball in PR as of late. This was more about the Pelicans not wanting him to risk the possibility of a re-injury next season.

Carlos Arroyo, the PR GM said an MRI performed last week says the injury hasn’t fully healed.
The Pels are being “precautionary”, sure.
Carlos doesn’t answer to anyone on the Pels payroll. Whatever the Team PR is being told, their quotes in the media probably ring a little more true than what this front office says to the media.
Also I don’t care if the Pels lie to the media. Get the job done. If he’s not healthy in the summer, let him heal up as much as he can.
Daniels is probably getting more reps in, and it’s what’s best for franchise to take Jose’s minutes.

Damn I just saw that article. That's depressing to see him still dealing with it 5 months after it happened.

Definitely the best decision for the team. Sad for Jose. Pro ball is a tough business, though.

Dyson isn't taking Jose's minutes.
If they want Dyson to be a PG, then he's taking minutes away from starters quite possibly, b/c there's no PG in our starting lineup. But more likely he's taking minutes that DG, Naji and Richardson got last year.
Dyson is a top 10 pick, he's not looking to be a backup PG, and we aren't looking for that either. We want him playing starter minutes, regardless if he starts or not, and eventually will become a starter. That's the expectation for a top 10 pick, and we've seen that potential.
Jose will get his normal 15-20mpg of backup pg minutes, and occasionally get a few more if he's playing lights out and we let him close the game out.

Yeah, Jose is a disruptive force. He comes in, and his GTAs and full-court defense take the opponent out of their offensive flow and frustrate opposing point guards.
There's no way that Jose is getting less than 15 minutes, because what he does goes beyond "backup PG."

exactly. He is the backup PG. He's not playing off the ball when he's in the game, and he's not losing his backup PG minutes unless his production starts to significantly decrease.
Dyson can easily play with him off the ball, and Dyson should get some run with the starters as the PG.

Feels like it's time to post up the minutes distribution again, because if Dyson is taking a leap this year, Jose is the only one logically where minutes will be pulled from. And I say that as a dude who love Jose, I just posted a few days ago about how all we do is win minutes with Jose while we're a below .500 team overall with Jose on the team, he plays winning ball. But otherwise, the minutes Dyson can take would come from CJ/BI/Herb/Trey...so Jose is just the likeliest one to lose minutes.
Below isn't necessarily my take on what minutes should be but more so what a realistic minutes distribution looks like:
CJ 33
Herb 28
BI 34
Zion 33
JVal 24
Trey 30
Jose 18
Nance 18
That's 8 dudes and puts us at 218. Teams don't generally use 9 man lineups on a nightly basis in the regular season, so that's 22 minutes left for Dyson and likely 1 other(Naji/Hawkins/Liddell)
So if not Jose, it goes back to minutes coming from the guys I listed above, which I just don't see other than maybe Herb, but Herb is better than Jose so even that doesn't fully make sense. If we're saying Dyson is a PG, he won't be taking minutes from CJ...the level he'd have to at for that to make sense is just wayyyy too much of an expectation for this season.

It makes sense to me. There's always someone out for a few games with a minor injury, or someone gets two quick fouls and has to sit most of the first half.
In the real world, there are plenty of minutes for both Dyson and Jose.

No American teams should let their players play for foreign (I know PR is a territory but still) national teams.
If you make your money in the US, you play for team USA.
