Two USA Today writers pick LSU to win the SEC West because of their production on offense

Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams, USA TODAY NETWORK
Adams' prediction: LSU will win the SEC West.
Nick Saban and Alabama hold a lot of sway on preseason voting, and for good reason. A pick for Alabama is a smart pick more often than not. But if you examine the rosters, LSU is the smarter choice to win the West. The Tigers returned a lot more production. LSU has answers at quarterback. Alabama has questions. Oh, and don't forget LSU won the division last season.
Toppmeyer agrees.
What was Saban getting at when he said expectations are a premeditated way to create disappointment? Adams wonders whether Saban aims to downplay pressure this year, while Toppmeyer thinks the comment was directed at what happened last season, when Alabama went from preseason No. 1 to missing the College Football Playoff.
TTT - Played poker with Bama fans at the casino recently. They're predicting Alabama will lose three games this season.

What’s that have to do with Tic Tac Toe?

This is a year where I really wish we played Alabama earlier in the season to avoid them having time to develop and ease a QB into play.

Alabama has earned the benefit of the doubt with their success over the last 15 years. The other thing they have going for them is their toughest games (at least on paper) are all at home: Texas, Tennessee, LSU.
That said, LSU has much more returning production and continuity going into this season. Alabama has two new coordinators, and they also don't know who their QB is. It appears there is concern there at QB based upon the fact they took a ND transfer after spring football. A player who didn't exactly set the world on fire at ND.
There is no reason to think Alabama won't be good. Even with last year's "bad" season, they lost only two games...both as time expired (or had already expired in LSU's case)...on the road...on the final play. Nonetheless, logic suggest LSU is the better choice.
For YEARS LSU's talent was equal, or, at wort, barely interior to Alabama's. Yet, the HC (both Miles and Orgeron) were vastly inferior to Saban. That's not the case any longer. As made evident last season.

They also had two (or 3) come down to the final play that they won.

The other side of that same coin is the fact the defense gets to see the new QB more and have more on film.

Bama has 3 unknowns competing for their qb spot, how anyone picks them 1 is beyond me
2 of them sucked in the spring game and the other was dog shite at ND

If I'm a Bama fan, my biggest disappointment last year was that they returned all of a very talented front 7 on defense, but weren't elite there. Bryce saved their asses often.
Tommy Rees has his work cut out for him to get the kind of offensive production they got with BOB, whom the fans loathed, while trying to stabilize the QB position.

What I appreciate about Bama fans, they’re honest. Bama’s got both offensive and defensive questions this year, can Saban pull it off, he always has in the past.

I love when people overlook us because history shows that's when we're at our best.

I think it will be LSU or A&M. bama doesn't have a QB. LSU and A&M do , plus Petrino could be a difference maker.

Kind of crazy that Bama (or any team) can be 2 plays away from going undefeated while at the same time being 2 plays away from 4 losses.
One think to add is I think the fear many teams had of Bama is fading away.

IF Ty Simpson can't win the job I would expect Bama to line up with Milroe and run the triple option with all those RB's they have...will look like 95 Huskers.

Not a wise choice as Alabama hosts LSU this year.
