But in the last five years it feels like something has slipped, at least temporarily. A word comes to mind: Detroit.

New Orleans is in worse shape than Detroit. Detroit is on the upswing and NOLA hasn’t even hit the bottom yet.

More than ever, to live in New Orleans lately is like navigating an abusive romantic relationship. On Mondays, Wednesdays and weekends the sex is magical, she laughs at your jokes, reads to the kids and bakes for the elderly neighbor – and on the other days she staggers about high and half-dressed, neglects to flush and burns the furniture with cigarettes.

Probably the best part of this wall of text

He still refuses to tell you what the real problem is because he's afraid of what the media will say about him if he does. Everyone who lives here knows what the problem is, even the ones who are the problem. Yet nobody will ever say it. It's odd that the surrounding parishes which have a much different "leadership demographic" have managed to stay relatively functional being but steps from the Orleans Parish line.

Do you think anyone that works/worked at the TP would say the real problem? They are too afraid to say it... I was born and raised in New Orleans and left after Katrina to live in Metairie. I know that's not a big move... But all the good stuff that New Orleans offered seems to be forgotten when you leave. I rarely go into New Orleans... like years rarely (3 times in the last 7 years).

Too afraid to say that the elites in Audobon Park and Uptown have allowed the city government to ruin the City for their monetary gain?

The word momma used for people like him was "slow".

One of the problems is cowardice, which he has fully embraced by dancing around the real problems in the article.
