If handling the situation by non-lethal means isn't possible, the answer is 3. The ol' trench sweeper can't be beat inside of 20 yards
ETA: Non-lethal doesn't mean non-violent you down-voting fricks. If I can knock a single intruder's teeth out with stock and send him off in the paddy wagon I'd rather do that.
