I understand that many things on Twitter are over exaggerated or even hyperbole. I’m far from being a dietician, but I found this tweet interesting in how there are ingredients in our food here that are illegal in most other places in the world. I’d like to hear from people more knowledgeable than I am about this.

A lot of our food system was based off food scarcity. We obviously have surpassed that.

Now do a graph with obesity rates

Also the majority of our health care costs are wasted in the last year of life on people that have 0 quality of life.

You’re on the money. I highly suggest listening to Peter Attia, Rhonda Patrick, What I’ve Learned (YouTube channel), and Dr Pradip Jamnadas. You’ll get enough info from them on the modern American diet to know that we are 100% killing ourselves.

We eat a lot and don't move around a lot.

They don't eat as much and move around more.

Life expectancy charts comparing countries can be misleading. Denmark has 5.7 people and is mostly homogenous, while have 331.9 million people and are far from it. The fact we're only two years off of their life expectancy is a testament to the healthcare system in this country, if anything, given our shitty diet, lack of exercise, and preference for sugary, processed foods.

America is all about the cheapest for the most. We are gluttons who want to overeat for the lowest price. This is why we have "Mexican Coke" for instance. Really we just have American Coke here, because high fructose cornsyrup is cheap and super sweet. For some reason we need that in all of our soft drinks here, while everywhere else they use regular sugar.

It's a shame really. The amount of natural food available in other countries at reasonable prices is astounding when comparing to our high in cheap sweeteners and preservatives we have here, and what's really disturbing is that we pay a lot for these cheap products now anyway. We are slaves to our gluttony.

Two reasons

1) the shite we sell as “food” in the US cannot be sold in other countries.

2) the health care system is so full of waste and abuse. Insurance costs are outrageous.

Corporate Profits above all else. That’s ultimately where we are as a country

The US basically has the same population as all of those countries combined. Terrible comparison

Food quality is the problem, not activity level.

It all started with the sham 7 Country Study by Ancel Keys an continued through the USDA pushing bad science to push products. Throw in a food industry that just wants to push cheap shite for profits and a Pharma industry that just wants you to take their pills for life and here we are.

Seed oils, HFCS and cheap grains are the core of the processed foods that lead to this. Eat "real food" and you will be as healthy as you can be. Stay on the perimeter of the grocery store. The food you should be eating doesn't have a shelf life of month/years.

They are finally admitting artificial sweeteners cause cancer. Most of us knew the shite was bad for us the entire time. But they greased the right palms for a few decades.

Our corrupt government needs to be deported to Mars.

To get meaningful data out of an international comparison, major differences in demographics have to be parsed out. Match subsets in different countries with people of equivalent socio-economic status for example is
a good first step. Big mismatches in demographics seriously confounds any conclusion.

The worst offenders on this kind of study are the gun control organizations.

I have no doubt most of our processed foods are poison. Even simple microwave popcorn. Google it. And the FDA approves it all. Then let’s hop over to GMO foods. See a correlation?

Since we're doing correlations: most of these countries have much better urban and suburban environments where people walk/bike and take public transit at a much higher rate than our (mostly) car only city designs.

Oh, and a public healthcare option. But I guess all of that is "unamerican" compared to our endless highway sprawl where you can drive to your preferred fast food no matter where you live and have to abide by your employer's health insurance options that are somehow expensive and ineffective.

It's really not that complicated but as the other poster said: corporate profits and all that.

All of our food is trash and tastes like shite. Anyone that has grown their own veggies like tomatoes knows how shite it is. Hell, I prefer the local tiny wild bananas to the industrial crap served up at Walmart.

That graph is lacking the entire continent of Africa. The rest of the countries on that graph are lacking any significant African descendants.

ETA: The same population that unequally suffers from diabetes and has increased mortality from COVID is a greater percent of our population.
