Imagine Rickey playing today where:

Pitchers are limited on the number of pickoff throws they can make.

Pitchers have a time limit on throwing a pitch, making it far easier to time your jump.

Larger bases shortens the distance between bases.

If Rickey singled/walked in todays game you might as well just put him on 3rd base.

Replay could slightly factor into this.

If I could choose an imaginary team from history, he would be the first player I chose, over Mays, Ruth, Williams anybody. Because he could beat your arse in so many different ways.

Ricky was unstoppable when he played. He routinely reached third after a walk or single. Ricky also stole home four times in his career.

I’m choosing Ohtani over anyone if we are competing under the modern game. He’s a freak batter and pitcher and we know he can hit 100mph fastballs consistently (which who knows how the old timers translate).

Came here to post this.

He was an absolute menace. I still have my Leaf gold card of his record steal.

Rickey Henderson is the poster child for what is about to hit MLB. Teams are calling up younger guys and more athletic dudes all over the league. Gamechanger.

Would he even make it up to the majors as a base stealer in the analytics era, in smaller ballparks and without artificial turf?

I keep hearing how unbreakable his records are now, implying that today they wouldn’t even let Ricky be Ricky

The player to watch now is Ronald Ocuna. Dominant lead off hitter.

I’d give up my firstborn to have Ohtani on my team. He’s utterly amazing. But he can beat you two ways. Ricky could beat you with his bat (contact and power, dude hit nearly 300 homers), his legs and his glove.

Prime Cobb was a world class athlete then and would be even greater with modern training methods. Supposedly Grantland Rice lined it up for him to scrimmage with Vanderbilt’s football team and the first time he touched the football he took it 80 yards to the end zone and ran over some people on the way.

Really?

Other than stealing bases and striking out, tell me which ways, in particular, he could beat their arses? Mays is the only guy in that group where there is even a chance for a debate and when you considered Mays missed nearly 2 seasons in the prime of his career due to military service, even that is probably not debatable. I'd say that statement is a bit hyperbolic.
