What is that one city that surprised you and you had a blast?

What’s the one city or region you visited and were surprised at the fun or experience you had? The kind of place or trip you just don’t forget.
I’d like to get some ideas for future trips.
For me, it’s swimming with the manatees in Crystal Rivers, Florida. Go in the winter when the manatees are in the springs. Tour companies give you wetsuits and take you on a party barge to the manatees. The water is crystal clear because it’s spring water and you snorkel next to manatees. You can also take trips floating down the spring rivers and snorkeling. It’s definitely a trip I suggest to everyone.

I didn't spend much time there, but I was surprised by Omaha when I stopped though there about 2 years ago.
I went to the Durham museum (kind of like a history/city cultural museum in a former train terminal) and then grabbed a bite to eat at this place called Block 16.
It's kind of a hike to get to from either of the coasts, and I'm not sure if I'd go there just to visit it (would love to go for the CWS or a specific event though), but it exceeded my expectations of what I thought it would be like, and I really enjoyed my time there

Wichita
Was there for work a couple of years ago and had a blast at the bars, ate some fantastic food, plus there was hot pussy everywhere
I was expecting to be bored out of my mind for the week, it was the exact opposite

this is going to sound unlikely but we had a blast in downtown Jackson a few weeks ago. We ate good, drank good, saw stellar live music and went to a very very cool ag museum
not a destination by any means but if you have a reason to be there fun can be had

This is great. Cities or places that aren’t necessarily destination places is exactly what I’m hoping to hear. The kind of places you make a road trip out of by passing through on your way somewhere else.

I don’t know if this one counts as a surprise necessarily, but I really enjoyed Louisville, KY. A lot more than I expected to.

Had a great time in Tulsa. Tons of good restaurants (Juniper, Bull in the Alley), cocktail bars (Valkyrie) and craft brewers (Fassler Hall, Neff) All within reasonable walking distance of the hotel (Tulsa Club).

I liked Kansas City.
The WWI Museum was really well done.
The restaurants were great. Lots of BEEF.

Kansas City is borderline outside the scope of this thread.
I’ll go Cincinnati. Great downtown and pretty cool suburb Covington across the river in Kentucky.

I'll second Tulsa. For beers, CabinBoys and Heirloom ales were both great. Then they have an amazing park called The Gathering Place that is free but would cost $100 in most cities given all the kid amenities, play structures, etc.

I agree with you. I hated Lexington. Louisville was such an improvement in all respects.

I haven't been to Tulsa, but have wanted to go. Heard great things about the Gathering Place.
I also want to see Price Tower. It's apparently the only skyscraper that Frank Lloyd Wright ever designed (or the only one that actually got built).

Not that I thought it would be shite, and it was more not totally knowing what to expect, but I really like Charlotte - South End is a lot of fun. I love walking the Rail Trail.

Milwaukee. Was surprised that it was as much fun as we had, but lot of breweries including PBR, tons of bars, and pretty good food. Stopped there for a night on our way from Chicago to Lambeau for a bills packers game

Bend, OR
I went for five days of snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor and fell in love with the town.
Tons of food and drink choices, live music and quirky culture.
Edit: example of culture
McMenamins Old St Francis School

Stateside, Tampa seemed to me like a kind of afterthought until I visited it, and I really like it.
Internationally, I’d say Athens. I expected it to be just centered around its past, but it’s still one of the greatest cities in the world even if you’re not into all the ancient ruins
