It was a properly done sequel. Pretty basic, not too absurd with the story, a few twists here and there.
Does it stretch believably a time or two? Yep. But it absolutely delivered. So rare for any movie in current day.
*as simple & honest as I can put it. Why a dv?

It was ok but people circle jerk this movie like no other. It’s getting to be too much
It's how bad hollywood is now. All a movie has to be is not complete garbage and people will put it on all time great lists.

Anyone else still revisit this gem?
I’ve probably watched the F-14 scene about a couple dozen times with and without commentary.

Has it been long enough where everybody pretends that it sucks and isn’t one of the best sequels of all time?
It’s that good IMO. I get why some people think it’s overrated, and that’s fine. But outside of minor gripes from me, it was quite literally as great of a sequel as they could’ve made.
FYI: my main gripe is that none of the younger pilots knew who Maverick was, especially in the bar. He would’ve been an absolute legend for his heroics in the first movie, and presumably would’ve taught at Top Gun for a while. shite, he was still active duty military as of the beginning of the movie. Yet the youngsters had no clue who he was. In a Miramar bar nonetheless, run by a chick very intimately familiar with him? Nah, son.

Happened while they were all in preschool.

Working on some top secret shite that they wouldn’t know about

I thought it had been a while since Penny and Maverick were a thing if at all.

You do know how legends work, right?
There are tons of people much older than me that did great things I know about because of how great/legendary they were.
You’re acting like just because they were young when it happened that stories wouldn’t be remembered and told, pictures wouldn’t be everywhere, they wouldn’t have learned about it in flight school (or countless other places), etc.

That's exactly what is going on here. A buncha folks that are too cool for school acting like it was just okay. Gimme a frickin break.

Pure fantasy
Well, I'll be. Stretching the truth, ignoring the reality that thinks like Tomahawks don't need GPS and can easily follow terrain features at very low altitudes, etc. McNet, meet Hollywood, it's new on the scene. I know you must have hated the "MiGs" in the original Top Gun too.

Pretty entertaining, but waaaay overrated.
Isn't entertainment the point of movies?
I think I've watched Maverick 2-3 times, but the new All Quiet on the Western Front I've watched 6-7 times, including in the theater.

I've seen it about 100x because it's my youngest sons favorite movie

I just watched Maverick for the first time on P+. Really good movie. I’ll watch it again at some point.

I think it's awesome and am glad it was recognized with a best picture nomination, but for me, it doesn't have much replay value.
I wouldn't mind re-watching the last 30 min or so, but don't have much interest in sitting through the entire movie again.

The end battle wasn’t classified. Stinger literally tells him “How's it feel to be on the front page of every newspaper in the English-speaking world…”
That’s a big deal, and he would absolutely be a legendary hero in the overall military alone, but especially in and around Miramar. Plus he goes there and teaches as well.
You think pilots training today don’t know who the Tibbets family is, or who Paul Tibbets is? Of course not. He’s a legend and will never be forgotten. I’m not saying what Maverick did is the same as Tibbets, but just making the point that it’s virtually impossible that pilots today wouldn’t know about him, regardless of how many years later.

Imagine going to a movie for this!
And, chances are they would have heard of/known about “Maverick”, but would they have known what he looked like until formally introduced? Maybe it took a while to get all those photos from Miramar to North Island.

Never finished it. Too much cheese for me.

It was the funnest movie I saw last year. So I can understand people having a blast watching it a bunch. But it’s certainly not revolutionary cinema or anything.
Posted on 7/2/23 at 10:45 am to CBandits82
I haven’t watched it. The OG Top Gun is one of the worst movies I’ve ever sat through.

Me neither. Gay erotica isn't for me.

I could understand seeing Risky Business for the 10th time .... due to being arguably Tom's best film and being released 40 years ago.
But the new Top Gun ..? one in the theater and maybe one at home. A noah's arker of a film for sure.
