I actually respect this more than livescope.

Update: Looks like the baw is an electrician with an electrical engineering degree, so dont get any ideas folks.

Catfishstunner. EBay.

That exact rig pictured is for sale on EBay for 55.00. Made in Pineville,La.

The little sealed gizmo with the battery clips. Other variations available for a range of prices. They are all over the internet.

Having shocked catfish and fished with a livescope, i'd say shocking them is more sporting and thats not a joke. Except for flatheads, they just roll up like logs but bluecats run on top the water.

Electrofishing does have its place in fisheries management. Biologists routinely use the technique to count fish for research purposes and to collect eggs. The electrical currents temporarily stun the fish and they typically recover within minutes.

It's OK if you're acting on behalf of the government, but God forbid you want some fish for yourself.

I've done it before. It was a Skoal can with the leads running out of it. Worked great. I used to have the plans for one used by LWF but I don't have it anymore.

I had a tank commander back in the mid 90s from Guam. That dude used to take Hoffman devices (tank gunfire simulators for when we we were doing force on force mock battles). That dude would take extras and go to the river and hook them up to a battery to shock fish.

We were some dumb arse tankers that did some questionable shite every single day.

Tell me more about why this is illegal, but setting cans out or noodling and harvesting fish in their nest to lay eggs isn't illegal.

And yes, I have issues with authority.

Ex. You cannot raise Bobwhite quail in captivity in Louisiana unless you get a permit to do so. However, I can get a piece of paper that allows me to hunt them into local extinction.

Sad to hear about, but not surprised at all. I've come to realize that regardless of how many laws are out there, some trailer trash DA is going break the law because that's just what they do for entertainment.

History repeats itself.

quote:

Electrofishing is an illegal fishing method for recreational fishers nearly everywhere in the U.S., with the exception of just four counties in North Carolina. This peculiar exception is a holdover of a bizarre fishing method known as “telephoning,” in which Southern fishers in the 1950s jury-rigged components of old crank-style telephones to send an electric current through the water and stun fish. This manually operated electrofisher does not generate enough power to shock fishes with scales, but it is quite effective in stunning catfish (which are scaleless). Telephoning was outlawed in many places in the 1950s, as it was believed to be decimating catfish populations, but “hand-crank electrofishing” was made legal in North Carolina in 1985.

He said "Jury-rigged"

Step 1 Find the positive and negative posts on the rear of the magneto.

Step 2 Cut the #10 stranded wire into two 15-foot lengths. Strip 2 inches of the insulation off one end of the two 15-foot lengths. Attach the stripped end of one wire to the magneto's negative post and the stripped end of the other wire to the magneto's positive post. Strip about 10 inches of insulation off each wire's trailing end.

Step 3 Row the boat to an area where fish are likely to school or hide. Drop one wire over one side of the boat and the other wire over the opposite side of the boat. It's best to have at least two people for successful "electrofishing".

Step 4 Crank the magneto, being careful not to touch any area near the rear of the magneto, where electricity is generated. A telephone magneto can generate 8 to 110 volts of electricity, depending on the size of the magneto and how fast you crank. Stop cranking as soon as you see fish rising to the water's surface. Have your companion scoop them up with the net.

Yeah, it's stilled called "telephoning" fish around here. My dad lost a boat when I was a kid when he got caught doing it. He and my uncle had to do weekend jail time until the Sheriff commutated their sentence in exchange for enough catfish to do a fish fry. Which they telephoned, of course.
