I have looked at the Smokefire a bit. I was curious if anyone would recommend it

I don't know about the newer models, but the originals had all kinds of issues. I gave up on my EX4 and went with another vendor.

Looking to get into smoking and I'd love to have something that could also replace my Weber kettle. Anyone have any recommendations? Is there a pellet smoker that performs well for grilling\searing and smoking? Budget under $1200ish probably.

If you didn’t have anything and asked me what buy for that budget, I would have told you a Weber Performer or a PK Grill and a Weber Smoky Mountain or a Pit Barrel Cooker. You get the best of both worlds and it’s pretty much set and forget.

If I were buying a pellet grill and I owned a Kettle, I would look hard at a CampChef Woodwind Pro. It looks like it is the best pellet smoker because you can add wood chunks to up the smoke level. Keep the kettle for grilling.

Also I just enjoy the process of cooking with wood and charcoal and the flavor it produces more than pellets or propane.

What exactly do you think the pellets are made of?

Masterbuilt gravity series is what you want. Have not used my offset once since getting one.

I've been looking at these but it seems like they would eat through a bag of charcoal pretty quick. Is that incorrect?

Is this supposed to be some sort of gotcha?
Everyone that grills,BBQ, or smokes as a hobby knows exactly what I'm saying. You don't get the same flavor out of a pellet smoker as you do using a stick burner. Not saying its bad but I prefer the other and the work that goes along with it.

Looks like these would serve my purpose. Any particular model or is it just a difference in surface area between them?

800 comes with a griddle top, 900 is a costco exclusive and comes with a pizza attachment. I got the 800 from Walmart for $250 last October.

It's not any worse than an offset, probably a bit better.

They are so defensive even though I said its just my preference and even recommended what I think is a pretty good one to the OP.

wait til the end of the season and you can get them for around $200 from Walmart.

If you see this, please advise, as that would worth me buying to place in storage.

To the poster worried about charcoal use, I fill the hopper in the morning and it's not a full bag. The only cook I am required to add more on is a packer brisket. Everything else finishes before I need to add. I also layer wood in with the charcoal and drop a couple large chunks in the ash bucket.

Mine came with the griddle, but I never use it on the Masterbuilt. I found that it almost perfectly fits on my Weber gas grill, and that is so much easier that the steps on the Masterbuilt.

Does it burn through everything that's in the hopper regardless of the cook time? I guess what I mean is...would you adjust your charcoal in the hopper if doing a shorter cook?

It does not. When you are done, you turn the unit off so there is no fan, then replace to metal blockers to prevent air flow. It will continue to smolder a bit, but you will have left over charcoal.

It takes me a few cooks to run through a hopper if I am just grilling burgers or chicken legs when I shut it down and put the blockers back on. I find it a decent grill as well, I stopped using gas unless I want a quick hi temp sear.

Have you considered a ceramic smoker?

I know all the Chad’s laugh at these. But a Kamado or BGE will last a lifetime when taken care of. Also works great for direct grilling.

You can buy all sorts of aftermarket attachments, like rotisseries, gaucho grills, etc.

A pellet smoker and a webber kettle are two different animals. Sure you can smoke on a webber, and you can grill/sear on a pellet smoker, but that's not where either shine.

Get a pellet smoker for long cooks. Keep the Webber.

There’s been a fair bit of ridiculing of Kamado people by the pellet people.

I noticed this company producing mods for the Masterbuilt Gravity Smokers. They say the mods are to improve performance and extend the life of the cooker. Looking at the mods they sell, I’m assuming there are some longevity issues probably caused by heat and rust. How long do people feel this smoker will last before you start having issues?
