I noticed this company producing mods for the Masterbuilt Gravity Smokers. They say the mods are to improve performance and extend the life of the cooker. Looking at the mods they sell, I’m assuming there are some longevity issues probably caused by heat and rust. How long do people feel this smoker will last before you start having issues?

I’m not sure about longevity of it, but if you get one of these, I would suggest you get try and find one already assembled. They can be a bitch yo put together if you’re not a handyman. Also, they have no customer service. They have an 800 number, but it just gives you an email address that says they’ll get back with you in 5 days. I’m still waiting on a reply from a month ago. There is a Masterbuilt fb group that’s pretty helpful. The pit is a great concept though.

I’m a soft handed nerdy engineer, it didn’t take me very long to assemble my first 650. The 800 I got later wasn’t any trouble at all since I built the 650. I’m not sure what you found hard about assembly.

If you are capable of following directions, Masterbuilt is very good at replacing pretty much the entire grill under warranty if it warrants that much of a replacement through their customer service. People have no issues getting new switches, fans, even entire gravity chutes when they are damaged from purchase. The pretty much operate under a replace it with hardly any questions policy.

Longevity wise, I keep mine pretty clean and out of the weather. My 650 is on like year 4, it’s on its way out, got my 800 last year on deep discount. There are some stainless steel mods that will make it hold up better. I got a cover for the firebox and a fan protection screen. I didn’t bother with the fire brick covers, but had to replace the fire brick on the 650. I don’t think they will hold up well if you don’t take care of them. The charbroiler gravity is supposed to be made better if you don’t take care of your grill as well.

Is this supposed to be some sort of gotcha? Everyone that grills,BBQ, or smokes as a hobby knows exactly what I'm saying. You don't get the same flavor out of a pellet smoker as you do using a stick burner. Not saying its bad but I prefer the other and the work that goes along with it.

No, and that’s totally fine. But there are people on this board who push the narrative that pellet smokers aren’t cooking with real wood, which is 100% bullshite.

When we get a house I’ll likely get a stickburner and DigiQ but pellet my pellet smoker make great Q when I lived in the city.

I’m not.
When I buy something, I don’t want a 2 hour job.

The only one I bought was the hopper cover. It stopped some smoke leakage issues I was having.

As mentioned above, RecTeq, most can get up to 700 for grilling but also do well smoking. And they are built to last.

Not to mention that they're American owned and have what is probably the best customer service in the industry.

Got a Weber Summit Kamado and a WSM and neither give me any trouble at all and are outside in the elements 24/7. They are about as set and forget as they come and can get up to 20 hours on a single load of charcoal. Plus they have zero motors and come with the Weber customer service. No idea why people go to such a lesser product that doesn't hold up very well.

Price, ease of use, and quality of cook.

I haven't spent over $250 on a gravity series. Spent maybe $100 on each to upgrade them to last longer and make clean up easy. They are as easy to run as a pellet grill and taste far closer to a stick burner than anything else on the market that I have tried so far.

A WSM has all of this and will last 30 years.

So does an Oklahoma Joe Bronco and it's > WSM.

WSM will most likely last longer and probably has better customer service. Plus a WSM can do everything that a Bronco can do.

If you didn’t have anything and asked me what buy for that budget, I would have told you a Weber Performer or a PK Grill and a Weber Smoky Mountain or a Pit Barrel Cooker. You get the best of both worlds and it’s pretty much set and forget.

I've gotten a lot of use out of my PitBarrel. Simple. Easy to use and clean up. Works great. Use a Weber Genesis Grill if we just want to cook burgers or such on the grill fairly quickly.
