About to get a new place on 3 acres. The way the yard is set up I really don’t want to build a fence. Have 2 dogs. One is 10 and the other is still a puppy. I’ve been shopping around online and I think our best option is going to be one of the ones that you can set the perimeters on via gps. But those are really expensive. Does anyone have these and what’s your experience with them? Do I have any cheaper options? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated

I know a guy with an invisible fence company. He won’t sell their version. He has to buy one a year and just eats it. He says they don’t work near as good as an in ground system.

I have the pet safe wireless system. It has really been good for us. I have a GSP an is full of energy. This one has been nice. Plus it is portable. We bring it to the camp to use it there.

I have the petsafe and it worked for several years with my choc lab until one day it didn’t. He was trained on it and knew the boundaries but would take that shock and walk through it when we were not looking.
Took a while to catch him doing it and he would slowly walk through it then get past it and take off running doing hood rat shite. If I was outside he would act like he respected it even without his collar but would walk the driveway when he wanted to roam.
He’s back to living in a kennel and getting play time and free time when I can supervise him.

I had to make the decision on wired vs wireless dog fence a while back and did quite a bit of research on it. The wireless ones I read about were just not reliable. Even doing stupid stuff like shocking when the dog inside the house on occasion. Don't know if that was due to some kind of signal interference or what. Ended up going wired. Not too big a deal to rent a trencher for a day. Granted, I don't live where there are a lot of rocks....or any really.

We have tried tractive and halo.

Tractive works ok, you can set boundaries but it just sends a notification that says hey they left the boundary. It sucks as far as durability, we've had the dogs either lose them or break them 3 times in less than a year.

We tried Halo for one of our dogs. Same concept but it beeps and shocks when he is near our outside the boundary. Doesn't work worth a shite, half the time he is out of the boundary before it updates. The shock does not seem to bother him at all, and he was terrified of it when we had an actual wire fence at the last house. He has also broken 2 collars in 6 months. 600 for the collar, we are very disappointed with it.

I have 20 acres and a lot of it is wooded, a wired fence isn't really feasible. Right now we use the tractive so we can at least know where they are. They always come back but have been upwards of 3 miles off the property.

I have the Pet Safe close to 2 years now.It has worked very well for my dog-female Redbone.
I take it off at night to minimize neck irritation, she sleeps in the house.
Put it back on in morning as she stays outside most of the day.A couple times I forgot to turn it on and she still stayed inside boundaries.

The squirrels have learned her boundaries and they don’t bother to run.Drives her crazy ,she wants to go after them so bad.

A previous dog, chocolate lab mix,I had a in ground wire fence. When she decided she wanted to leave the yard she would take off running and take the shock. When she came back she would sit outside the boundary and wait for me to come take the collar off.

I used the PetSafe in ground system on 2 labs. The first lab was gentle female and I set it on high settings to train her. It shocked her so good she literally hug my leg for the next hour as I walked the yard. I felt terrible but she learned in one hour. The next one was on an alpha male full of piss n vinegar. He ran through like it was nothing. I called company and they said I needed the stubborn dog collar with the longer contact points. They even sent it to me at no cost. PetSafe has tremendous customer service, one time I ordered the wrong replacement collar and they also sent one at no cost. Anyway, with alpha male I had to shock the crap out of him all day for him to learn and several days afterwards. Also, be sure to have collar on tight with barely able to put two fingers under it. You can’t leave it on this tight all time because will create pressure sores. But, after fully trained, you should be able to not keep so tight. Mine will still stay in yard with no collar and I let him wear it loosely now, and he never leaves the yard. Also, I only use the same two exit places when removing collar to go hunting, walking, etc. PetSafe in ground can cover up to 3 acres.

Dogtra Wired Amazon

I have 5 of my 7 acres fences with wire. If you go the wired way, make sure you use the heavy duty wire that has the thick black insulation.

I used the thin stuff the first time and had to redo my install. If you have a tractor, you can do it yourself with the right implement. Me and a buddy did it in a couple hours.

Best thing I’ve done on my place so far! My two boxers get to run around all day and I have peace of mind.

I had one. It worked okay until she saw a squirrel or a rabbit or some other shite on the other side of the boundary that she could not help but chase. Then it was off to the races without another thought.

Then she would not want to cross back over. Mine was a wire in the ground system...Petsafe I think.

Probably an unpopular opinion:

I don't know if they are all approximately the same strength or not but the should have more bite to them. Not stun gun level or anything more than what mine had.

I tried mine on my own neck and it would not have deterred me at all. It is not even as strong as sticking your tongue to a 9 volt battery and I use to do that just for shits and giggles.

I used pet safe for a lab and golden retriever. They don’t even wear the collars anymore.

I just installed the Sport Dog in the ground system and so far it's been great. Previously had pet-safe wireless and hated it. The boundary limit is too small and every time a storm came the lightning would make the collar shock the dog. My Sport Dog system also came with a handheld remote that works with the same collar.

I agree. You are limited to a certain space with the wireless. You can buy two units and they will overlap.

I also like that I can bring it camping and the dogs quickly learn their boundaries with just the beep.

The Dogtra one that I have turns my boxers a flip if they get to close just with the vibration. The shock is adjustable. They don’t like it.

I have two acres. I purchased the wireless unit and the coverage was not nearly enough to cover my property. Ended up buying the wired system, I think it is by PetSafe, and installed myself. I rented a machine from AAA rent all in Baton Rouge which dug the trench, laid down the wire and then covered. The machined didn't work quite as well as advertised but I did the whole perimeter of my yard in one morning.
