Tiger and Phelps, as mentioned already. But also

While great, I think Bill Russell is the GOAT of all athletes. 11 championships in basketball. Dominating player in his time, and probably the smartest.

97 players have 1000 points or more in their career. Who was the fastest to 1,000 points? Wayne Gretzky. Who was the second fastest? Well, Gretzky. His 1001-2000th points were faster than anyone made it from 0-1000. Of special note, he is the only player to reach 2000 points, and he finished at 2857.
He was so dominant that in many fantasy leagues, he was split into two players - assists and goals, because it was basically unfair otherwise.
And he’s the only guy who ever took off his skate and tried to stab someone with it.

other thing Gretzky messed up was having a daughter who looked more like him than her Mom

Gretzky's shorthanded stats in the NHL:
Regular season 73 goals, 76 assists
Playoffs 12 goals, 17 assists
Total shorthanded points: 178
Lemieux has 49. Its like he dwarfed his peers and all-time great players in every statistical category.
Does Joker dwarf Nadal and Fed?
Gretzky might be sadly underrated now if this is an argument for OP.
There will be another Joker. There were basically 3 in the last 15 years at the same time...each replacing each other depending on the time of career or day or clay.
There will never be another Wayne Gretzky at least not only statistically but time and place in dominance.

Maybe it's me, but how quickly they've gone from one GOAT to another in tennis makes it feel like a lesser accomplishment.
Wasn't that long ago that Federer was the GOAT, then Nadal, now Djokovic.
There have been big name hockey players since Gretzky, but none have challenged his status as GOAT.

lol, Bill wasn't even the best player at his position in his own generation.

The real interesting business question play that is here. How will Jordan deal with Novak and Lacoste blowing up the “23” concept on all the clothing he is wearing?
Well he'll have 24 in a month from now so it won't be a problem for long.

If you took away all of Hank Aaron's home runs he would still have 3000 hits.
Yeah, that's not nearly as impressive as Ruth having more home runs than literally every other team.

He’s actually more impressive than Gretzky in a lot of ways because tennis is a global sport.
Thank you.
If the potential GOAT hockey player were born in Alabama, zero chance he ever touches a hockey stick. Hell, he probably doesn’t even ice skate. But a potential GOAT tennis player from Bama *might* hit a tennis ball around sometime and take up the sport.

I have Aaron #2 on my all time list…. But he didn’t dominate like Ruth did when he played. IMO no player will ever match the stats Ruth had in 1921.
Aaron isnt even top 4 in his own era Mantle Mays Berra Williams

Individual sport GOATS vs team sport GOATS is tough.
This is an easier argument for these two when Djokovic wins a few more, which he definitely will. Right now he's just barely above Nadal and Federer in his sport. Gretzky is so far superior than the next guy you still have to give him the nod. Serena probably has a better argument than Joker.
You don't have the awards to compare someone like Babe Ruth (probably my personal GOAT) to others. He probably would have won 8 MVPS if the award was around then and possibly a Cy Young. Even in team sports, I'd give him the edge over Gretzky, Brady, MJ and LeBron.
Sugar Ray Robinson definitely has a case, but people forget about boxing. I'd have him over Djokovic.
I love that Djokovic said he wants to stay out of the debate and leave that to others, unlike LeBron, who tries to make a case for himself.

One thing people keep saying is “he didn’t dominate by as large a margin as Gretzky”
Djok has 78 more weeks at number 1 than anyone else in history, with that number clearly growing…..That number would be over 120 weeks more already if he wasn’t banned for the vax also

That's because he hasn't. In fact, if you're looking for the most dominant stretch in any tennis player's career, either Borg or Federer makes the best case. Did you know that from 2004-2007, Roger Federer won an astounding 11 out of 16 Grand Slam tournaments? Did you know that Bjorn Borg won 15 majors by the time he was 25 years old? Djokovic has never had a run as dominant as those and probably never will. I mean, Djok only has a combined record of 57-52 against Federer (27-23) and Rafa (30-29), so it isn't like he outright dominated either of his most prolific peers.
Wayne Gretzky won the MVP for EIGHT straight years and it was apparent early in on his career that he was easily the best hockey player in history. Djok can't say that second part.
